Special Needs Support
How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?
All children are allocated a Key Person at the setting who observes the children in play. From this, individual children's progress is monitored in line with the EYFS and Early Years outcomes. Every full term (3 times an academic year) a unique story is completed for the child using key person knowledge, observation and with input from parents. This is entered onto the Kent Milestone Assessment Tool. This gives a picture of how a child is progressing and allows us to identify any strengths and weaknesses. A targeted plan is developed for any areas which may need additional support,
How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?
The Key Person approach allows families to be actively involved in their child's learning and development at the setting. From initial starting at the nursery, parents will complete a starting points profile with their Key Person. A thorough show round and settle sessions enable parents to explore any questions they may have. We operate an open door policy where parents and families are actively encouraged to come in and talk to their Key Person, the SENDCo and the Manager. The Key person plans and works primarily with the child, however the SENCo is there to support and we also have an Early Years Teacher who oversees our curriculum.
How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?
We plan 'in the moment' at the setting so all provision is in line with individual children's needs and interests. Differentiation happens organically in the environment and through practitioner interaction. We use targeted plans to effectively support children to make progress. We also use Kent Best Practice Guidance to adapt and develop our environments and activities accordingly.
What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?
We have parent sharing events events every full term (3 times per year) which is an opportunity to share and contribute to the child's unique story and plans. The Key Person Approach at the setting allows daily handovers where parents can discuss their child's day. We display the learning children have been exploring in the setting and also regularly update our social media pages. We have a lending library of bags that can go home with parents to play and learn. We also have leaflets on all areas of learning and some ideas to share at home with children and families.
What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?
The SENDCo will support the Key Person to complete any medical plans and targeted plans for the child. We also seek advice and support with family permission from the Inclusion team , specialist teachers and other professionals, The voice of the child is taken into consideration by talking to families and watching the child's interests and patterns of play.
How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?
Progress is regularly reviewed with family input. The specialist teaching service also reviews the plans with the SENDCo and the family.
How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?
The setting environment is regularly reviewed and updated to ensure we meet all the needs, learning styles and interests of all the children attending the setting. The nursery was recently awarded communication friendly status and this has been embedded within the practices and environment at the setting. There is an up to date training plan and many practitioners have accessed courses relating to SEND. the SENDCo attends all relevant meetings locally to support her in her role as well as offer the best support for children and families. She regularly attends training to ensure she remains up to date and knowledgeable in her role.
How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?
The setting is very accessible, all on one floor with wide doorways and suitable toilet facilities. We rewcently updated all environments to be more communication friendly as part of our communication friendly status award.
How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?
All transitions are effectively supported from starting with us to room changes. This is achieved by ensuring settle sessions are effectively and sensitively managed through effective Key Person relationships. We support transitions to other settings by sharing information and communicating with the appropriate colleagues. School transitions are supported by ensuring visits from teachers are welcomed and a through handover of information is achieved.
How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?
We use the Kent Best Practice Guidance to ensure our provision is meeting the needs of children and a tool to ensure our effectiveness. The Milestone Assessment Tool also allows the management to monitor and evaluate progress. Each targeted plan is reviewed and monitored regularly. Parents and families are welcomed to contribute to all reviews

What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
As an open door setting we regularly have feedback from families. We also have parent questionnaires which are sent to families to allow them to contribute to the setting evaluation processes, these are available to see at the setting. We take any complaints seriously and work with families to resolve these by investigating and completing a complaints form, these are available to view at the nursery.
