Special Needs Support

We identify by using starting points and the progress check at 2 years old, along with observing the childs development and behaviour.

We will discuss your child's development with parents to determine where extra support maybe needed. We keep communication open between parents through keyworkers and outside agencies so that everyone can work to best support the child.

We promote daily contact with your keyworker from informal and formal discussions and the option to have private meetings at a time that suits the parents.

During your child's time here we will continue to track their progress through observations set out by the 'Early Years Foundation stage' statutory framework and through 'The development matters in the Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS)' non statutory requirements. 

We will plan and observe each child under the EYFS framework, understanding that each child is unique and provide resources tailored for that child.

* Under the prime areas; C & L; Our setting provides a language rich environment to suit families attending our setting.

* PSED; Our setting will make contact with outside agencies to best support your child within this area, like turn taking, managing feelings when we have put into place everything we can do for that child.

* P.D; We will asses the environment to make changes like quite areas, asses the noise level and seek advice from specialist teachers in order to make changes to suit and support the child's needs.

Our staff are trained or training in the Early years qualification with different work and life experiences. All staff can offer advice and support when and where needed.

Our environment has a sensory area, and quiet places that children children are able to access and explore with their chosen toys.

We review the environment and make changes to suit the ever changing land scape to best support the children here. We review the resources and purchase new where possible to support a child.

The staff go on training to further their knowledge and understanding.

Lollipops SEND policy states that; Lollipops is open to all members of the community, we do not discriminate against a child with SEN or refuse a child entry to Lollipops because of any disability if reasonable adjustments can be made to accommodate them.

We develop an action plan and differentiate activities to ensure that people with SEN can participate successfully in the services offered by the preschool and in the curriculum offered.

The SENCo and keyworker work closely with the parents to best support the child, referring them to LIFT or working alongside specialist teachers. Children who have medical needs are supported with a careplan specific to their individual needs.

Each child is allocated a keyworker, we have a buddy system of two keyworkers per child to help support should a keyworker be absent that day.

The relationship between parents and keyworkers build the foundation to openly discuss the monitoring and development of their child's progress, through observations and highlighting their strengths and area's that the child needs extra support.


We are committed to include and make sure all the children are involved in all activities and these adapted to suit the child. Staff meetings are held to discuss how we plan ahead, how to make sure every child can access the activity. Daily outings are planned in advance with in mind children who need extra support or the use of a buggy or wheel chair so that they are still included.

Lollipops preschool is situated on the Mezzanine floor of the Orchard shopping centre. There is a lift to bring you to the floor with the main entrance, disable parking is available in the Orchard car park. 

The preschool itself has a large floor space, the room is accessible for a wheel chair and the disable toilet within the room. The room is purpose built and areas can be adjusted to accommodate more room or access.

During term 6 we make up a role play area with uniforms to dress up and pretend to be going to big school. We sauce from local schools the correct uniform and display photo's graphs of the school building which then becomes a real talking point for the children and staff. The area becomes a step into a reception class for the children to play, dress up and have fun.

We promote school visits and liaise with school SENCo's, teachers, parents and keyworkers to support the transition from our setting to big school as well as attending transitional meetings to discuss the transition of the child.

We have regular visits from KCC early years Improvement advisor, Inclusion and equality advisor who with their feed back help us to make changes to improve the setting. We attend LIFT and SENCo forums so to keep updated with changes and to listen to other professional ideas.

We hold regular staff meetings and take on board suggestions, arrange meetings with parents and outside agencies.

Parents also fill out questionnaires when they leave as well as during the school year to be able to make changes where needed.

At Lollipops preschool we encourage parents to visit the setting with their child to see if this is the right setting for them.

We encourage settling in sessions which can be extended should the child not be settling well with the transition from leaving their parents. Every child will settle in their own time and our aim is to make it as smoothe as possible.

Please call us. We are also happy for you to drop in during the hours of 9-3 avoiding 12-1 as this is lunch time.

Here at Lollipops we have an open door policy where parents are able to discuss any thing privately following that Lollipops has a complaints procedure we follow up with and during this time the parents are kept informed and the out come.

We send out questionnaires to get feed back from parents throughout the year and when they leave.
