How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?
At Goldilocks Nursery we use Key Person approach, with each child having a key person and buddy. Their role is to develop a close trusting relationship with both children and their parents/carers. Getting To Know Your Child document and Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) will provide information relating to a child's particular needs which will help staff to put in place specific support prior to a child starting nursery. Your child's key person will observe you child at play and make assessments regarding their learning and development. You will have the opportunity to share these observations alongside photos and pieces of your child's work when their key person shares the learning journal with you and your child. We have an open door policy so parents do not need to make an appointment. Staff are available to talk to at the begging and at the end of every session, our friendly and approachable team are able to access if your child has extra needs and we can access support from outside agencies and organisations if need be. We have good connections with the Early Years team who can provide advice and guidance to the setting and parents.
How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?
You will be invited into the setting to share your child's Learning Journal, to discuss their development and progress and we will explain how we use the Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS) to form our judgements. You can add observations from home life to the journal, share additional information on ongoing issues such as toileting and family relationships. Your child's key person or Manager will offer suggestions and guidance to parents about your child's learning involved in supporting the child's learning and development will also be included. A communication diary can be provided for the carer and the key person to have regular communication. Training for parents can be sourced to help give a better understanding and guidance on your child's individual needs.
How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?
We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage guidelines set by the Government. We are committed to ensuring that all children are able to access our services, made to feel welcome, and that our activities promote welfare and development. With additional resources and visual prompts, and support of experienced staff all our activities are made fully inclusive. The daily experiences on offer will be developmentally age appropriate and adapted to meet every child's needs. Your child's key person will use their professional judgement to plan a tailor-made approach. Funding can be applied so that additional staff can be implemented to support a child in a 1:1 or group activity. The environment can be adapted and funding applied for, to ensure that it is best suited to the needs of all children.
What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?
Staff attend Early Years Foundation Stage training and training recommended to us by outside agencies and pass their knowledge on to their colleagues. The SENCO attends regular SEN forums run by KCC offering an opportunity for SENCO's to meet from a range of different settings. The SENCO and Manager attend SEND briefings - which outlined the changes which will be implemented, we have arranged Makaton training for all staff to enhance our inclusive practices. All staff are offered regular courses on a wide variety of themes and topics related to early years. Our practitioners have also received training on specific topics such as Behaviour Management.
What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?
We believe that a strong multi-agency approach is the most effective way to support a child or young person with SEND. We encourage outside agencies to observe the child interacting within the nursery setting. Our staff are offered training in all areas of children's development; some staff have specific areas of responsibility and receive extra training. We work alongside health visitors, speech and language therapists, inclusion team officers and outreach workers from Early Years support teams.
How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?
We will do our best to cater for all special educational needs, seeking appropriate training for staff, to enable them to meet your child's needs. If a parent/carer has expressed a concern regarding their child's development or a member of staff has notified the SENCO, a meeting will be arranged with parents to discuss a child's needs. If required we will contact the Early Years team for their support, and work alongside other agencies.
How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?
We organise regular trips into the community e.g. visiting the local library, supermarket, home for the elderly, garden centre and local parks. When staff are planning an outside activity, risk assessments will be undertaken to determine which areas of support individual children may need. Parents will be invited to discuss ways to achieve full inclusion in our trips and outside visits.
How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?
A portable ramp is available to aid wheelchair access to the side of the building but no had rails or disabled toilet facilities at the moment. However, handrail is installed to the stairway. We have a unisex toilet and a changing area with low level hand washing basins. We have the ability to work with physiotherapists so that appropriate equipment is supplied and installed if necessary. We have experience with families who have English as an additional language and we use a wide range of visual aids to help children communicate their needs.
How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?
Our settling policy is very flexible, we take the time to ensure that you and your child are comfortable in the setting, some children require shorter initial visits and we will work alongside you to ensure your child settles well. You will be offered short hour visits to come into the setting with your child, when you feel it is appropriate, you will be asked to bring your child in to preschool for an hour visit without you. We will ask parents/carers to fill in Getting to Know Your Child document asking about your childs likes and dislikes. If a child attends more than one setting then the key person will ask permission from the parent/carer to authorise sharing of information of the child's interests and development at the nursery and we would ask the same information from the other setting, ensuring a clear development plan. When it is time to move on to infants school, early years teachers from local schools are invited to meet the children in the setting. We add resources to create school role play situations enabling the children to begin to become familiar with school. We have experience in supporting children with special needs who are transitioning to new schools. We offer to hold transition plan meetings with parents and carers, outside agencies and teachers from the new school so that strategies are in place to ensure that the move is as smooth as possible using social stories too. Learning journals and progress reports are shared with the new school so that they have a good understanding of your child's needs.
How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?
A decision about the type of support needed will be based on discussions with parents, child, SENCO, key person and the recommendations made by the relevant professionals. A child's EHCP will help to provide staff with information about a child's specific needs and an informed decision can than be made. Your key person will work alongside the SENCO and outside specialists in order to determine the desired next steps in the child's development in order for then to fulfil their potential. The whole staff team will be aware of strategies with regular reviews and evaluations by your child's key person all of which you will be kept informed.

What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
We understand that parents, carers and family life play a fundamental part in a child's education and development. It's also vitally important that we hear your views, ideas and personal observations. We use questionnaires so that parents can air their views and comments, we hold arts & crafts days, quiz nights etc so that parents have the opportunity to talk and discuss various things in an informal way, and would love parents to join us for special activities such as cooking and sharing stories and talent. We have a What Have We Done Today' white board to share extra information on day to day activities enjoyed by the chidren during our sessions. We discuss each child's individual Next Steps with their parents/carers and agree on appropriate targets together. Further to our daily feedback we have with all parents/carers opportunity to ask questions, discuss progress and offer feedback.
