Special Needs Support

The nursery fosters good and secure relationships with children's families to encourage dialogue and confidence between nursery staff and parents. Information is shared about children’s development and any additional needs are discussed before a child starts in the setting. Information may then be gathered from other professionals to ensure a child’s needs are met within the setting.


All children have a 'key person' who will settle the child into the nursery and form a secure bond. The key person is responsible for planning for that child's needs and assessing the progress of their development under the 7 areas of the EYFS. (Early Years foundation Stage)


Ongoing assessment, such as the progress check at two years of age, as well as termly summative assessments and regular conversations with parents, ensure that children are being challenged as well as nurtured, to help them make good progress.

The educational programme is planned in discussion with all children, key staff and is overseen by the nursery owner and manager. All children will have the opportunity to engage in activities that help them to learn about their world and to enhance their knowledge. 

Daily contact with parents and carers, enables a two way flow of communication that enables parents to tell staff about their child's current wellbeing and needs, and also to find out about and talk to children about their day.

Ongoing observation and assessment ensures that children are enjoying their learning and fully engaging in the experiences on offer.


All children are individual and their needs are met accordingly.

Reasonable adaptations are made to the nursery environment to enable children to access all areas, especially to enjoy the outdoor environment and to spend time experiencing the wonders of nature.

Children have specialised plans that ensure all possible targets made within the EYFS Framework are achievable and met with parental support and if necessary, the advice of other professionals.

The nursery works closely with specialist organisations.

We have highly experienced staff with many years of practice and skill who have worked with children with special needs and difficulties. Together with parental input and specialist involvement, we plan for each child individually to give them a happy and positive nursery experience.

The nursery SENCo and staff have received training in a variety of SEND issues and use well researched strategies to help children to learn and progress.

Because the nursery is small and the staff team constant, we get to know each child and family extremely well. This fosters an ethos of confidence in each other and develops a friendly but professional partnership in order to plan, discuss and report on a child's progress.

We have secure and positive links with our local specialist school. When necessary we request outreach support from their team, who provide specialised advice and strategies as well as resources for the individual child concerned.

The SENCo, key person and manager work closely with parents to ensure the child's needs are met.

The nursery policies are followed to ensure medicine is stored and administered safely. Specialised medicines are given after training by specialist nursing professionals.

The nursery always encourages informal discussion at any time, either in person, via the telephone or by email. Formal reporting in the form of summative assessments are emailed to the parents three times a year and transfer records are completed at the end of a childs time in the nursery. 

Formal face to face discussion about a child's wellbeing and involvement in nursery life is carried out each spring. Staff carry out formal wellbeing and involvement screening three time a year but due to the small nature of the setting, we know when a child's wellbeing is suffering almost immediately and discuss the possible reasons for this with parents.

Our observation and assessment procedures allow us to track children's progress and plan for areas where a child needs support.

All activities are planned and risk assessed to ensure equality fo all children.

When necessary, separate risk assessments are carried out with certain children in mind, to enable them to access the same opportunities as others.

Parent's will always be asked for their views and advice in events such as trips off the nursery premises.

The indoor environment is on one level, however the garden is set on a hill and has different levels and areas where children play. 

All reasonable adjustments are made for children in wheelchairs. 

Staff are trained in procedures to protect themselves from injury whilst moving children to different areas of the nursery.

Transition to school is well supported for all children.

 We have strong links with our local schools and our nearest specialist school. Staff from both settings communicate extensively and parents will be asked for consent to share written reports and to have verbal discussion about a childs needs and progress, which will be debated between both nursery and school to ensure a smooth transition.


The nursery SENCo attends all SENCo forums and LIFT meetings as necessary to maintain a network of contacts and to gain insight into new thinking.

Workshops and training by professionals with diverse specialisms, allow us to evaluate our practice and learn new skills, that we pass on within the nursery.

Parents evaluate our service through our annual questionnaire.

The manager will discuss any needs your child may have and will arrange for the necessary team of staff to be available during settling in visits.

The nursery operates an 'open door policy'. 

We are very open to suggestions and feedback from parents via verbal communication, annual questionnaire or comments in the suggestions box.
