Special Needs Support

We have a strong SENDCo team that work with parents, families and outside agencies as needed.  Through observations of our children we can identify any extra help needed.

On admission, we ask you to complete a settling in form which gives us a chance to get to know your child and their strengths or any area they may need extra support with.  When your child first starts we assess their starting points in line with a government document called Development Matters.

Our SENCo is Kym Russell and she ensures families have the best support with their child's development.

We will always consult with parents to discuss any needs before we ask for help from outside agencies.

The key person approach is the cornerstone of our practice and you will have informal contact with your key person on a daily basis.  We can arrange longer meetings if you feel you need to discuss any aspect of your child's care or development.  The key person will keep a learning journal with photos and observations of how your child is developing.

We hold yearly parents evening which you will be invited to attend.

We use the Development Matters and  Birth to 5 Matters as a guide, and will ensure each child is treated as unique.  We observe, assess and plan for your child in three prime areas (Communication and Language, Personal, social and emotional development and Physical development) and four specific areas (literacy, mathematics, understanding of the world and expressive arts and design).

We have an open door policy, each child has a Key Person and we use suggestions from parents and outside agencies to support children.

We ensure our environment allows children to get fully involved in their learning. Our walls are painted in neutral colours to promote a calm atmosphere.

The SENDCo works with the key person to make sure we provide a wide range of resources appropriate to supporting children's development and will obtain specialist equipment if necessary.  If children are receiving support from outside agencies we may be able to claim extra funding to cover the cost of additional resources, staff training or additional staff cover.

We use the best practice guidance to support our teaching.  This document sets out a range of teaching strategies which can be used to support children and is divided into universal, targeted and personalised levels of support.

We can offer extra one to one time, additional resources and advise for any child with a special need.  This is set out in our SEND policy whichyou can read on our website.

For children who are not making sufficient progress the SENCo and key person may discuss referral to an outside agency.  If required we may refer to the Specialist Teaching and Learning Service through the Local Inclusion Team Forum (LIFT) with the consent of the child's parents.

We observe all of our children and the Key Person, SENDCo team, childcare managers or the Key Person will always discuss your child's day with you and keep you up to date.

The key person is the main person responsible for guiding, monitoring and supporting the physical development of their key children and will discuss any developmental delay with you.  You can discuss your concerns at anytime with your keyworker.  Individual appointments can be made for lengthy discussions.

Each activity we provide is child centered and is achievable by all children whatever their ability so that all children are included.  The key person will ensure that any planned activity is suitable or adapted to meet the needs of your child.

Sadly only our baby room is on the ground floor and is accessible by wheelchair.  Wherever possible we make reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of children or parents.  We have one designated disabled parking space in our car park.  There is an accessible toilet near the back door.  Please let us know if you have any difficulties with accessibility.

We meet with teachers from schools that our children are moving to and send a transition report to them.  Relevant paperwork is only sent to schools with the consent from parents.

By observing our children we can ensure they are moving forward and getting the support they need.  We attend LIFT meetings and SENDCo forums.  Parents have the opportunity to take part in our annual questionnaire.  We regularly review our policies to ensure that they are up to date with current legislation.

Contact us by email or phone to arrange a visit where we can answer all of your questions.

We have a strong complaints policy and an open door policy that allows parents to talk to us at any time.  Our SEND policy provides the context for supporting children through the graduated approach.  Our complaints procedure is displayed in the entrance hall and  is on our website.  We always welcome constructive feedback and will address any issues raised.
