Description

We are a highly qualified staff team experienced with a wide range of developmental needs.

Special Needs Support

When your child joins Magpie Pre-School we will ask you to fill out a Registration form which asks for Information about your child, any health issues they may have, as well as emergency contact details. On your child’s first day, they will be appointed a key-person who will spend time with you to complete a 'marvellous me’ form which collects important information about your child’s interests, strengths and any area’s that may need to be supported. With this information the key person will be able to individually plan for your child’s development. When your child first starts we assess their starting points in line with a document called Development Matters.

The statutory assessment called the ‘progress check at 2yrs’ is completed and discussed with you. Any delay in development can be discussed and appropriate ‘next steps’ arranged. Our setting uses a range of assessments to identify children with additional needs for example: Every Child's A Talker (ECAT) – Speech and Language, Termly Progress Tracker- all areas.

Tracie Corrigan and Robyn Allan are Magpie’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators SENCo). They will make sure you and your child receive the support and resources needed to help with any issues raised or observed, this includes managing behaviour.

Tracie and Robyn attend regular training, works closely with you, your child and your child’s key person, liaises with other agencies relevant to your child and attends the Local Inclusion Forum Team (LIFT) meetings to gain advice and make referrals to the Specialist Teaching and Learning Service. They also complete any relevant paperwork needed to record, monitor and refer children who need extra support.

On your child’s first day a key person will have been allocated to your child. They will build a strong and positive relationship with you and your child, observing, assessing, planning, supporting, encouraging and challenging your child which will give them the confidence to develop.

Your key person will:

  • Give you daily feedback when you collect your child.
  • Be available to speak to at the beginning/end of the session to discuss any concerns or information you would like to pass on.
  • Invite you to attend a parent meeting twice a year (March/April and July) to discuss your child’s development and ‘Next Steps’.
  • Be available for meetings at your request at a mutual time to both partys.

If targeted or personalised plans are required, the SENCo's will ensure you are involved in the content of these. Your permission and views will also be required if outside agencies are needed for extra support.

The Early Years Foundation Stage is the statutory framework settings must use to ensure your child is cared for, learns, develops and is safeguarded to the correct standards.

There are three prime areas and four specific areas in development that your child’s key person observes, assesses and plans for your child.

Prime Areas :       Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional development and Physical Development.

Specific Areas: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design.

Your child’s key person will take into consideration your child’s interests, information given by you, observations of your child and their unique needs, to plan their next steps and encourage them to progress.

All activities and experiences will be planned and adapted for your child’s individual needs.

At Magpie’s we have an environment that has natural, calming colours to enable children to focus, listen and talk without unnecessary distractions.  We have cosy spaces that can be used as quiet areas. The areas are divided by furniture that is clearly labelled with text and pictures for the children to be able to identify objects and resources easily.

Staff plan for each individual child’s needs using a variety of resources. Visuals such as pictures, signs, time lines and Makaton are used to help with understanding and communication. We work in partnership with outside agencies, following their recommendations of strategies and resources to use. Targeted and personal plans are set to monitor progress and ensure the strategies being used are effective and realistic.

We use the Best Practise Guidance document which is written by the Specialist Teaching and Learning Service and sets out a range of teaching strategies which we use to support children with the four broad areas of need. These are identified in the SEND Code of Practise as:

  • Communication and interaction.
  • Cognition and learning.
  • Social emotional and mental health.
  • Physical/sensory difficulties

At Magpie’s, we endeavour to build a strong relationship with all our families. By working together, alongside the graduated approach that we use, we ensure the best support is put in place for your child. The keyperson and SENCo will monitor the development of your child to ensure the strategies that have been put in place are helping your child to make progress.

If your child is still having difficulties, the SENCo will discuss with you the need to refer to other services through the LIFT (Local Inclusion Forum Team) meetings which are held six times a year, this will need your consent. If the referral is accepted, a specialist teacher would visit your child in our setting to provide additional advice and guidance. You will be involved and consulted at every step of the process.

All our staff are encouraged to attend and complete additional relevant training. Our SENCo will research, seek training and professional advice on conditions that we are unfamiliar with and share with all the staff at our setting.

Your child’s keyperson will give you feedback each day when you collect your child. An invitation will be sent to you twice a year to attend a parents meeting where your child's development, progress and any concerns will be discussed. If the dates are not convenient, then another date will be arranged. You are welcome to request an appointment at any mutually convenient time in addition to these meetings.

Your child’s keyperson will make overall assessments of your child three times a year, if your child has a targeted or personal plan, these are reviewed six times a year with you. Here at Magpie’s we use the ‘Kent Progress Tracker’, this analyses data entered for each child and highlights any gaps in progress either of individual children or  a whole subject area. We can then ensure these gaps are supported in our planning.

There are two statutory assessments your child’s keyperson will complete: the Progress Check at Age Two and the My Unique Progress document that gets passed on to your child’s Primary School.

We work with our local Children’s centre advertising any places available to parents on training courses and workshops.

All staff ensure the activities provided are accessible to all children attending the setting at that particular session, adapting them as required to cater for your child’s need.

We do go on offsite trips and for some planned trips parent/carers may be asked to accompany their child. Where numbers permit, parents will be invited to accompany us on trips and outings.

Magpie pre-school is a portacabin set in a fenced off area in the grounds of Boughton-under-Blean Methodist Primary School. We have our own gated entrance leading to steps or a fixed ramp to access the front door.  The inside is all one level with moveable furniture and has a disabled toilet and changing area. To access the garden there are three steps or the front ramp would be used, taking the path through the allotment garden, which would allow access for wheelchair users.

Magpie pre-school staff meets with the teachers from the local schools at a transition meeting where all the information of your child’s development is passed over. This helps the new school to be able to support your child as they enter their class. Your child’s teacher is invited to meet them at our setting as well as the transition meetings held at the School.

In the summer term, some activities are planned around going to school i.e. lining up games, uniform dress up and photo books of your child’s new teachers/ school surroundings. We also have a good relationship with our on site primary School and school leavers visit them for story times to get the children used to the surroundings.

Our SENCo attends regular training, SENCo forums and Lift meetings to obtain the most up-to-date information, advice and support from outside agencies. Parent/carers are kept informed of any advice given. You are asked for your input when completing targeted and personal plans. Once a year we send out a parent questionnaire for feedback and all staff are available to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child’s development, behaviour or additional needs.

Please contact Tracie Corrigan (manager)

At Magpie Pre-school there is always a member of staff available to speak with you. Parents are able to contact the manager directly by telephone, email or drop into the Pre-school. We ask that any complaints are put in writing and our Complaints procedure will be followed. The Complaints policy can be found in our lobby area, in the Policy folder. Parents are able to review Magpie’s on our Facebook page or website, and also by responding to our annual questionnaire.
