Special Needs Support

I meet with parents and children prior to them starting and also have settling sessions. I ask parents to fill in some details before they start about their child's likes and dislikes, recent achievements, any concerns etc. I make regular observations. I use a daily diary, have recently started to use Kinderly for observations etc and to share information and verbal informal conversations with parents. 

Mostly verbally and/or in the daily diary or on Kinderly. 

Each child is observed and encouraged to choose their own activities out of a range of suitable ones in accordance to their needs. Adult led activities will also be offered to each individual child to help support and develop their individual needs. All activities support the Early Years curriculum and the relevant areas of learning.

There is quite a lot of structure and routine in place within our day, but within this a lot of freedom. For example whilst we may always go to a certain play group on a certain day, whilst there children are encouraged to play and discover new activities, crafts, songs etc. Around the home we have visual posters etc and I also like to take my time to explain lots of things to children, eg what we will do next, how we will do it. I prefer a strong parent/childminder relationship so that we can work together to support children with additional needs or learning difficulties and mimic in both places, any strategies that may be working at the home or in the childcare setting 

I aim to provide a fun, loving and supportive environment to encourage children to always see my home as an extension of their own and therefore encourage their want to attend.
Full contact and health details are taken when a child starts and this includes permission forms for medication so that it is talked through and noted what medicines may need to be given, when and how. We also talk through a child's needs and support they are likely to need and what actions or resources may be needed to support this.

Using the relevant training that I gained through PACEY and through further training that is obtained regularly, I will use this knowledge to monitor a child's progress. I will seek advice from parents/carers and look to have open and honest conversations that will enable to support the child's needs.

All activities and outings are risk assessed and all children thought about. I pride myself on being inclusive and as such an activity or outing will only take place, if all those present can be involved and included. 

Childcare is carried out on the ground floor. The house and rooms within can be accessed by wheelchair and a ramp so can entre in to the house would be provided. We do not have a downstairs toilet at this stage. 

All progress and achievements of a child will be shared (with parents permission), with any new settings, to ensure the child starts the new setting with the best and most accurate information about them handed over. Having observed a child from the day they started in my setting, by the time they move on to a new setting or school, I will have a wonderful idea of their character and abilities and needs and can pass this on accordingly. Children are constantly encouraged with their next steps and so are prepared for their next stages in life. 

I ask parents for feedback and encourage honesty. If a parent feels an improvement or amendment can be made, I would like to know so that I can better the service I am providing and enable a child to feel even more comfortable within my setting. Parents can provide feedback verbally or in writing.

I have a compliments and complaints book that any parent is free to view or comment in at any time. 
Any complaints are taken seriously and where necessary used to make amendments within the setting.

Feedback questionnaires are given to children & parents twice a year in order to gain feedback and suggestions on what could be improved or delivered within the setting or what is going down well and people want to stay.
