How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?
We recognise that all children are individuals and develop at their own pace.
We take time to find out about your child through a meeting with you before your child starts at the nursery. During this meeting we will find out about any concerns or worries you have about your child’s development.
When your child starts at our nursery we take time to play and interact with them to learn about their needs and interests. We will then identify your child’s next steps and decide if your child may need some additional support.
If we feel your child requires additional support to make progress, we will implement a targeted plan with specific targets to help your child achieve. We may decide, in consultation with you, to access the support and advice of colleagues via the Local Inclusion Forum Teams (LIFT) or make referrals to the Specialist Teaching and Learning Service (STLS). They will observe your child in the nursery and give advice on strategies we can use to support your child’s learning and development.
If your child is identified with an additional need they will have a Personalised Plan, with targets to meet that are agreed with you, to help them make progress. These are reviewed and updated with new targets every term.
How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?
Every parent/carer of children attending the nursery is invited to attend a Stay and Play session three times over the period of a year to discuss the child’s learning and development and identify their next steps. The nursery recognises that the parent/carer has the best knowledge of their child and will work closely with you. If your child is identified with an additional need we will also invite you to contribute to your child’s Personalised Plan, which is reviewed and updated every 6-8 weeks. Within this we will focus on your child’s strengths, needs and progress. We will also update you of any meetings with professionals, such as the Specialist Teaching and Learning Service, ensuring that you are always involved at the heart of the decision-making process.
How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage every child is unique, and we will plan individually for all children with consideration for their needs, interests and developmental stage. Activities and resources are carefully chosen to meet the needs of the individual and we are happy to make reasonable adjustments to the environment to ensure that all children are included.
What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?
Learning activities are planned following observations of your child to ensure that they are well supported to make progress in all areas of learning and development. This is individualised to every child. We provide children with access to both the indoor and outside environment throughout the session and staff are skilled at stepping into children’s child-initiated play to extend their learning. We recognised the importance of language development so focus on providing opportunities to experience quality texts and high-quality talk, modelled by all adults within the setting.
For children who have a Personalised Plan there will be opportunities within each session to work towards achieving the specific targets they have been set based upon their developmental need.
What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?
When children start at the nursery, we complete baseline assessments based upon our observations of them as they interact with the environment, the staff and each other. We have a skilled teacher who will screen children for Speech and Language needs. Plans are then implemented to support individual children where necessary. The targets and strategies we use are shared with parents/carers so they are supported to work with their child at home.
We use a range of methods to support communication, such as using Makaton for learning key vocabulary, visual timetables to provide a routine for the child and communication boards to support with language development, to name a few. This ensures that all children have bespoke support to enable them to access the learning opportunities we provide.
Personal care needs are supported by all members of staff, and we will work closely with families to identify when a child is ready for toilet training. Staff are trained to administer basic medication and, where needed, additional training is provided for specific medical needs.
How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?
We recognise the importance of close interaction as the best way to observe what your child can do. We record new moments of learning in a Learning Journal. We invite you into the setting for a Stay and Play session every other term to review the Learning Journey and discuss your child’s progress and attainment. We encourage informal dialogues regarding your child and all parents/carers are welcome to speak to staff if they have any worries or concerns about their child’s progress.
How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?
We will support your child to take part in all planned activities as fully as possible. We may make adaptations, such as using additional staff, to ensure that all children can access the same experiences.
Trips and events will be planned to ensure that all children can participate. We would consult with parents/carers during this process where necessary. Risk assessments are always completed before a trip or special event to ensure that children are safe at all times.
How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?
We have good access for children and adults with mobility difficulties. The nursery is on one level and the doorways are wide to allow access. The resources are organised at child’s height, which is also wheelchair height, to allow for independence.
How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?
We work closely with other schools and settings to ensure that children leaving our nursery feel confident and happy and ready to start their next learning journey. We participate in formal meetings with local schools as part of the transition process and, with the permission of parents/carers, share the relevant paperwork.
How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?
The staff at the nursery and the Inclusion Manager work closely with other professionals who may be involved in a child’s care. We welcome the input from parents and professionals to meet the child’s individual needs. Plans set for children are monitored and reviewed termly with new targets set. Parents are invited to participate in this process to give input on progress made and future targets.
Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?
If you would like to visit our nursery please contact the school office. We will then arrange a tour and support you with completing the relevant application documents. We advise parents/carers to share as much information about any additional support their child may need prior to starting with us so we are fully able to meet your child’s needs from the very start of their time with us.
What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
We welcome opportunities for informal conversations with families at the start and end of each session and are keen to maintain positive relationships with parents and carers. You are always welcome to speak to the class teacher or your child’s key person if you have any questions or concerns. During Stay and Play sessions there is an opportunity for you to write a comment to provide feedback regarding your child’s nursery experience.
