Susan Atkinson

I have been a childminder since 1999 and in January 2016, received my third Outstanding Ofsted grade. My previous employment includes several years as a staff nurse in an Accident and Emergency dept and a Tumble Tots franchisee.

I maintain regular statutory training including first aid and safeguarding along with lots of other courses including working with children who have special needs and those who have communication difficulties.

I provide a high standard of care in a warm, friendly environment. We have lots of outdoor play and activities. Indoor activities include messy play, arts and crafts and a wide range of toys and resources to support children's learning and development.

Children enjoy a hot meal at lunchtime and drinks and snacks throughout the day.

Special Needs Support

I carefully monitor children's progress and if I have any concerns, I raise the subject with the parent/carer and discuss how best to proceed.

I send home a daily sheet outlining the days activities. There is also a verbal handover at the beginning and end of each day. For children of pre-school age, I maintain a learning journey which follows the child's progress. This is sent home at regular intervals so that parents can see how their child is developing.

I am happy to arrange a mutually convenient time outside of normal childcare hours  to meet parents to discuss any concerns that they may have.

Every child is a unique individual and I spend time getting to really know and understand each one. I can then use the child's interests to support and develop their learning.

I talk with the parents and also (with parental permission) any other professionals involved in the child's care. This may include other Early Years settings, SLT, OT etc

I undertake regular training to develop my own practice especially with regard to special needs.

I work with parents and other professionals to provide whatever support I can for each child. This is tailored and specific to the child's individual need.

Every child is observed while they are in my setting. Observations of note are recorded and each child's progress is tracked. Parents receive a regular written round up. Contribution from parents is welcomed and I am happy to meet to discuss any concerns with the parents.

All activities and trips out are risk assessed and considered for the suitability of the children in attendance that day. Whatever we are doing will be adapted so that everyone can join in equally.

There is one step at both the front and back doors. This can be easily managed however. There is a downstairs toilet.

When a child in my care starts a new setting such as a pre-school or primary school, I am happy to take them along for taster sessions etc and visits. We talk as a group about what will happen in a positive way in order to allay anxieties.

I constantly reflect on what I do in my setting and ways to improve. I send home a feedback form regularly and have a complaints policy that all parents are aware of.

Regular feedback form and parents are all aware of the complaints policy.
