Jade Corissa Martin

Hello! Welcome to Bear Cubs, an Ofsted registered, childminding setting in Faversham; offering quality early-years childcare and learning opportunities to children ages 0-5.

My name is Jade, I am a wife to Frank and a mummy to Grayson (21 months), and the past six years I was a primary school teacher in Sittingbourne, which I loved! During my time there I worked with many different and wonderful children, and was predominantly a Year 1 teacher focusing on both the EYFS and KS1 curriculum.

At Bear Cubs, we follow the Blossom & Root curriculum: a creative, flexible, hands-on curriculum with a focus on nature, literature, STEM, and art. We also believe that children learn and grow the best through free, child-led play and therefore their hobbies and interests are at the forefront of our day.
- Sessions are run with as much free play as possible. By creating an enabling environment that encompasses our curriculum, children have the freedom to choose their activities every day.
- A typical day at Bear Cubs would allow for guided and child-led free flow play, both indoors and outside in our secure garden.

We offer experiences such as:
- sensory & messy play
- mud kitchen play
- water and sand play
- kitchen classroom
- mark making
- role play
- story and song time
- phonics
- construction

At Bear Cubs, forest school is at the forefront of our day-to-day life. We understand the benefits of being out in nature and so the children are encouraged to be outside as much as possible; whether that may be playing in the garden, visiting the local woodlands and nature reserves, or taking trips. We believe that ALL WEATHER is GOOD WEATHER! Come rain or shine we will be stomping in muddy puddles and visiting the woods, park, farms, libraries and more!

While teaching forest school we follow the Little Robin Education curriculum to enhance and challenge our little ones with their outdoor learning and play.

Key Information About Bear Cubs:
- I work closely with parents to create a personalised settling in plan, to ensure that every child's individual needs are met from day one.

- At present I am only offering my services to children ages 0-5 and do not offer morning or after school runs.

Special Needs Support

I assess all children against the EYFS curriculum and use this to inform my understanding of their individual development. I use this to identify any potential special educational needs. I work closely with parents and keep in constant communication re children's development and any issues they may have.

If I have a concern about a child, I use the Best Practice Guide to identify what can be put in place to support the child, initially looking at the universal section and making sure that any suggested strategies have been initiated. If there is no improvement after using additional strategies, I then move onto the next section targeted support and complete a targeted plan. I collaborate with the parents when considering a targeted plan and all agree the strategies put in place to support the child.

After an agreed period of time this plan is reviewed to see if progress is being made or the plan needs amending. If after a further agreed period of time, there is still no progress the Local Inclusion Forum Team (LIFT) will be considered. This is a group of professionals who come together to discuss issues around inclusion to ensure that the needs of children are being met.

A constant dialogue with parents and potential healthcare professionals / other childcare settings that your child may attend is will be paramount to ensure that children are receiving the same level of care / methods and techniques to ensure consistency.

I look at the individual child and plan activities that focus on their own development, linking to the EYFS. SMART targets are used to create clear, achievable goals for parents and children. Activities will be set up with clear differentiation for each child so that they can all join in but at their own pace and level of understanding.

I change the ways in which I support children based on their own needs. Every child is different and I cater my teaching style to fit the child. I work closely with parents to support them on techniques that I am using with the child, and offer training to those who are unsure and need more support.

We monitor progress using the EYFS curriculum, development matters document and secure Family app - which parents and carers will have access to at all times.

Re trips - I constantly risk assess and adapt our plans accordingly. I also talk to parents about strategies they use at home and work together to emulate this in my setting.

Unfortunately, the building is not very accessible for wheelchair users due to the size of the hallways and steps in and around the home.

When I am informed of a new setting, I work with the parents to create transition books to share with the children in my setting. I take time to check in and talk to the children about it daily. I also lease with the new setting (if they will be sharing settings) re assessment and development.

Children's individual targets are assessed and adapted monthly. Parents are informed of targets using the Famly app and given the opportunity to comment / make suggestions.
