Special Needs Support

When children start at nursery we talk to parents and carers about their child, asking about likes and dislikes and any areas of development or additional needs which may be concerning them. During the settling in period, we observe and note the ‘starting points’ for your child and begin to build a good relationship between the family, your child and their key person. Your child’s development is recorded through regular observation and assessment, enabling their Key Person to identify any areas of concern.

We complete the progress check at age 2 and use KCC progress trackers for all children.

Any concerns are passed onto to our Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) who will observe the child and use screening tools to ascertain if involvement is needed from outside agencies.

Any concerns a parent/carer may have about their child can be discussed with the child’s key person, and the nursery SENCO is always available to give advice and support.

The Key Person, supported by the SENCO, will develop a written Targeted Plan to meet the needs of your child. We will have regular conversations with you and your input will be very important in the development of this. You will be invited at least every 6 weeks to a review meeting. If professionals from outside agencies are involved in the care of your child, you will have the opportunity to talk to them yourself.

We use Tapestry, an online Learning Journal to record your child’s activities and development whilst at nursery. Parents/carers can logon and see this at any time and add information, photos etc. of their own. At the end of each day you will have feedback from your child’s key person telling you how they are doing and what they have done during their time at nursery that day. We also have nurserycam so you can log on and see your child during their time at nursery.

The key person builds a good relationship with the child and notes their interests and fascinations. This informs the individual planning for your child, as well as their targeted plan. We will adapt activities depending on the needs of the child and provide adapted equipment where possible. We have a sensory room and good sized outside space. We can cater for special dietary requirements.

All our staff are trained in Early Years Practice and many of our staff have received additional training in EAL, ECAT, ASD awareness and Behaviour Management.

Our teaching strategies will depend on the child and their needs, these may include: visual support materials; signing; individual and group activities; access to quiet space or other dependent on the recommendation of outside agencies.

This will depend on the needs of the child. We hope to provide support to parents and carers by building a good relationship between the nursery SENCO, the child’s key person and the parents.

We have a robust Key Person policy which enables the child to feel settled and happy whilst at nursery and enables the key person to fully support the child.

We will regularly review your child’s progress using observations and summative assessments, i.e. My Unique Story and Tapestry Tracking system. We meet with the parents at least every 6 weeks to discuss and review the Targeted plan.

We strive to make our activities accessible to all children, this may mean making adaptations for children with additional needs. This could include additional staff support or specialised equipment.

We do not have outings from nursery.

The under 2s and our playgroup are on the ground floor of the building and accessible to all. Children over 2 and the preschoolers are upstairs. Our building is Grade 2 listed and therefore we are unable to make structural changes to enable wheelchair access upstairs.

When it is time for your child to move to a different setting or school, we will liaise with the new setting’s SENCO and arrange a transition meeting, with the parents, to discuss how best to support your child. We will pass on all relevant paperwork including the summary assessments and reports from outside agencies to the new setting.

Our SENCO regularly attends SEND Forums, LIFT meetings and training courses. All the staff are aware of the role of the SENCO and how to access support for any child in their care.

We welcome feedback from parents in our annual Parental survey of all our services and practices, including our SEND procedures. Staff are always available to listen to any problems parents may have.

All our Policies and Procedures are reviewed annually.

Please contact the Nursery Manager, Clare Humphrey, on our settings phone number or via email.

She will be able to talk you through our admissions procedures and current availability.

We have an open-door policy and are always available to meet with parents and carers to discuss any concerns they may have. We have an annual parents’ questionnaire, where parents can express their views about our services. We have a comments book and suggestions box in our entrance hall and welcome all feedback from parents and carers.

Concerns may be raised with our SENCO verbally, in writing or via email.

We have a formal complaints policy.
