Special Needs Support

When you register your child with my setting i will ask you to complete an all about me form which enables me to get to know your child and identify any needs for support or further development. When your child first starts their sessions with me i will assess their starting points in line with the development matters document.

A progress check at the age of 2 is a statutory requirement and will be used to identify any delays in development and required support for next steps. Any identified needs would be discussed with you, written and shared in the form of a target action plan.

As Senco in my setting i will ensure that families have the best support possible as well as any required resources in order to help your child's development.

I have completed training which assists me in identifying children that may require additional support and i am able to work closely with other settings to ensure that your child's needs are met.

As your child's key person i will be involved from the beginning in order to form a strong and positive relationship with you and your child. i have an open door approach so that informal contact can be maintained between us at all times and i will happily book a meeting should the need arise. I will complete learning journey's for your child in order to record their development throughout the year and will share termly reports with you showing planned next steps. I am able to collaborate with you on any additional planning that needs to be put in place such as a targeted action plan.

I will plan for your unique child using the three prime areas and the four specific areas of the EYFS such as:-

Communication and language - I Will provide a language rich environment for your child to meet their needs as well as doing group activities that are recommended within the 'Every Child a Talker' programme. I will work in line with speech and language specialists advice as well as sharing ideas for activities or resources that could be beneficial for your child at home.

Personal, social and emotional language - Through forest school, beach school and activities within my setting i will plan activities to promote and create a high level of well being and resilience. I will link with local specialist provisions, health visitors and other professionals for advice and support.

Physical development - Within my setting, forest school and beach school i will provide a range of environments that support your child's development needs such as sensory needs, fine and gross motor skills and behavioural needs. I can build links with specialist therapists such as occupational therapists and i offer an accessible environment for you to work closely with me in order to meet your child's needs.

The environment that i provide both in my home and the woods provides a calm and noise neutral environment in order to promote well being. All resources can be tailored to the individual needs of the children in my care and specific activities will be planned in order to enable children to reach their development potential and maximise learning.

If your child is not reaching certain learning goals or is not progressing with a targeted plan then i would discuss with you the possibility of referring to other services, your consent would be obtained before any referrals are made and you would be consulted at every stage of the process. If a referral is made to the Local Inclusion Team Forum (LIFT) and it is accepted a specialist would visit your child to give advice and guidance on what agencies could help your child and a personalised plan would be put in place. As a childminder i regularly update my CPD and attend training courses in order to extend my knowledge of SEND, in the event that your child has a need that i am not familiar with i will research information and attend any necessary training.

I will monitor your child's progress through observations which will be recorded in their learning journey, you are welcome to view the learning journey at any time by booking a meeting so that we can talk about their progress and any concerns. I will complete overall assessments at the end of every term for over two's, under 2's more often. I will also complete the statutory Progress check at age 2 which gives us the opportunity to discuss your child's starting points and the progress that they have made, if there are any areas where your child is delayed in development, i will discuss this with you which you can then share with your health visitor.

I will tailor any activity to ensure that every child is included and has the right resources that they need. As a forest school lead i will make frequent trips to the woods and will complete a full risk assessment which will take into consideration any needs which may cause risk, i will also complete risk benefit analysis to ensure that children with additional needs or SEND to participate and maximise their development. I will also complete risk assessments and put action plans in for all other places that i may visit such as the beach, park, local wildlife centre in order to ensure all children are included.

My front door has a large step therefore it is inaccessible for wheelchairs and may be unusable for people with mobility difficulties. I am happy to discuss individual needs and make reasonable changes where possible.

I will work closely with your child to prepare them for the transition to school or a new setting, i will plan in specific activities such as teacher role play, dressing up, i will talk to them about the process and share information with them about their new setting or school. I am happy to visit the new setting or school with you an your child and i am happy to book meetings in at my setting. I will share all relevant paperwork with the new key worker or teacher once your consent has been obtained.

Through continual monitoring and assessment i will be able to assess the overall effectiveness of my SEN provision as well as regular feedback from parents and other agencies. I will also annually review the policies and procedures that are in place unless a need to amend before review arises. Parent questionnaire's will be sent out annually however i aim to have a good rapport with both you and your child therefore feedback is always welcome and meetings can be arranged should we need to discuss anything.

I will work closely with you to ensure that your child has the right support in place prior to them attending, this may include additional settling in sessions, meetings with you and any agencies or key workers, home visits and i will complete any training required in order to fully meet your child's needs. I will also apply for funding under the Disability Access Fund (DAF) and work out how the funding can be spent in order to maximise your child's development and meet their needs.

I have an open door policy in place and would always encourage you to talk to me via face to face conversation, phone call or email, should you wish to make a complaint  i have a complaints procedure in place which will be shared with you prior to your child attending my setting. If you have a compliment it would be much appreciated if it could be in writing so that i can use it for prospective parents and other agencies. I will also send annual questionnaires to encourage feedback from you and your child.
