Admissions

The Playschool and Nursery is open to every family within the community.  The waiting list is operated on a first come, first served basis.  However the Nursery will limit the overall number of children in receipt of SENIF funding to Six across the whole setting, this is due to being able to preserve and maintain the high level of quality care and provision that we offer to these children with severe and complex needs.

Families joining the setting are made aware of our Equal Opportunities, Inclusion and Diversity Policy which is regularly reviewed, and have access to our admissions policy.

Valuing diversity in families

We welcome the diversity of family lifestyles and work with all families within our community.  We encourage parents/careers to take an active interest in nursery life and to engage with staff on their child’s development and learning journey. We invite families to share in their individual family customs and celebrations. For a family whose home language is not English or speak English as an additional language, we will ensure that steps are taken, such as an interpreter, to support communication and provide opportunity to engage in and participate in Nursery life.  We will make reasonable adjustments to our provision in order to provide opportunities and accessibility for all children and their families, ensuring equal entitlement to learning opportunities, experiences and resources; this will also include those in times of hardship.

Special Needs Support

When all children start at Barbies Playschool and Selwyn House Nursery we ensure that parents/Carers have an opportunity to discuss their child’s individual needs or any concerns they may have about their child’s development with a member of the leadership team. All children are offered at least two 1 hour settling in sessions, during the first session we request parents/carers to bring along their child’s red book and complete a settling in form with the child’s key person or class supervisor.  This process is to support the setting to get to know the individual child, their interests, daily routines, developmental history and to discuss any concerns that the parents/ carers may have. At this meeting we also establish starting points with parents/carers this enables the setting to determine each child’s age and stage of development in line with Early years Foundation Stage (Development matters) curriculum. From carrying out these starting points it allows the setting to see areas of strength and any areas where extra support may be needed.

The nursery operates a key-person approach where the child and their family build a mutually respectful relationship sharing thoughts and ideas on how to support individual children's needs so that children have every opportunity to meet their full potential.

Children's learning is observed and assessed and planned for by the key-person using the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, we collate this information in collaboration with parents/carer’s in the form of an online learning journal through ‘My Babys Days’ program. This enables parents to view their child's progress in nursery and add snippets or photos from home.

The child’s keyperson and class supervisor also carry out termly tracking of children’s progress against the Early years Foundation Stage (Development matters) curriculum to identify any areas that children might need extra support in and to monitor what progress is being made.

The ‘Progress review at two’ is a statutory assessment that is completed at the age of two with the child’s key person and parent/carers, this is an opportunity to review and summarise the progress each child is making in the their prime areas of development from the Early years Foundation Stage (Development matters) curriculum, it is also a time where any concerns in development can be discussed and next steps put in place to support the child to make progress, Including the identification of any additional needs or Special Educational Needs.

‘My Unique Progress’ reports are completed each term and follow the same structure as the ‘progress review at two’, parents/carers are invited into the setting for a parents consultation and a progress report is shared and discussed.  Any identified additional needs and special educational needs can be discussed and planned for. For some children it might be appropriate for the Nursery Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) to be involved in the meeting to offer advice and guidance on how the child and family will be supported and what the appropriate next steps could be.

All members of staff at Barbies Playschool and Selwyn House Nursery are aware of how to refer any developmental or behavioural concerns that have been identified through observation during the child’s time in the nursery to the SENCo.

At Barbies Playschool and Selwyn House Nursery we use a range of screening tools to help identify any specific support that may be required for individual children such as to support Speech and language development, fine and gross motor skills.

If a child has been identified as needing extra support they will be supported by the setting SENCo who will liaise with the child’s parents/ Carers and key person and provide support through a graduated approach- meeting the individual needs of the child whether that is through targeted plans, personalised plans and if appropriate through specific intervention’s.

At the setting we use the ‘key person approach’ this allows parent/ carers and children to build good strong relationships with a familiar adult, you will be introduced to your child’s key person during their settling in visits and have the opportunity to communicate with them at drop off and collection times as well as at termly progress review meetings.

All parents have access to their own childs learning journey through ‘my Baby’s Days’ system.

Three times a year your child’s key person will create a ‘My Unique Progress’ Report which will summarise all the learning that their child has achieved over the past term whilst at nursery and at home, parent/carers will be invited in for a parents consultation to discuss their child’s progress and plan next steps and any additional support your child might need with their key person.

At Barbies Playschool and Selwyn House Nursery we have a dedicated Inclusion team that is led by an accredited Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), her name is Rebecca Peachey , within this team is another SENCO and Special Educational Needs Inclusion Practitioner (SENIP). The main aim of this team is to ensure that children have the best support and resources to help with their development.

If a child has a targeted or personalised plan in place to support their development it will be reviewed in collaboration with parent/carers every 6-12 weeks with the child’s key person and the setting SENCo. During these meetings outcomes and targets will be set in a collaborative way so that there is consistency for the child both at home and at nursery.

At Barbies Playschool and Selwyn House Nursery we operate an ‘open door’ policy so if at any point parent/carers have concerns about their child’s development we encourage them to discuss them as soon as possible with their childs keyperson, class supervisor or SENCo.

The Nursery regularly works in collaboration with outside agencies to support children’s individual needs such as the Specialist Teaching and Learning Service, Speech and Language Therapy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Early Support, Portage and Health Visiting team. If the SENCo feels it is necessary for the setting to refer your child to an outside agencies to support your child at the setting then you will be consulted an parental consent will be sought. Outside agencies will work in partnership with you and the setting to best support your child. The setting may also make a referral for SENIF Funding (Special Educational needs Inclusion Fund) to help support your child’s needs.

The setting follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework which allows each key person to observe, assess and plan for each individual child based around their current development and interests, In all seven areas of learning,

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

The KCC ‘Best practice guidance’ is also used to ensure that the Nursery is meeting all children’s needs through universal practice, targeted and personalised levels of support. The setting will make adjustments to the setting to meet children’s individual needs where reasonably practical. Practitioners at the setting ensure they differentiate activities to allow all children to access and learn from activities planned.

At Barbies Playschool and Selwyn House Nursery, we ensure each class room is highly stimulating for children, by providing a wide range of resources and a colourful environment for children to play and learn in. We have separate areas around the nursery that provide quiet spaces (inside and outside) for children to learn and play. Early Years practitioners at the nursery provide the main resource to help extend children’s learning and implement strategies such as the use of Makaton (signing) to support language and using reduced language as well as encouraging positive behaviour.

Practitioners at the setting are all trained in early years practice, they also take part in regular training to gain further expertise, knowledge and explore new teaching strategies. All members of staff are continually developing the care and educational practice at the nursery, examples of training practitioners have recently attended included, First aid, safeguarding, letters and sounds, magic of maths, autism awareness, epi pen training, supporting children with English as an additional language, Every child’s a talker, Early talk boost, positive, relationships and social development in the early years, best practice guidance, sensory training, language for learning, encouraging positive behaviour and many more.

The Nursery also carry out targeted and personalised interventions to support children identified as having SEND to make progress these include, small group sessions such as the early talk boost, mini movements, clever hands, upward spirals, personalised sensory breaks, sensory circuits. These interventions are monitored to record the impact they have on children’s development and progress towards long term outcomes. These interventions are reviewed and updated regularly to meet the needs of the children attending the setting.

Children identified as having additional needs or SEND will be supported through targeted and personalised plans. These plans are produced and developed by the child’s keyperson, SENCO and parents, based around the child’s strengths and needs. If children are supported by outside agencies, such as, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy or Specialist Teaching Service, then their advice and targets will also be interwoven into the plans.

These targeted or personalised plans set out the provision and strategies required to support the child to make progress towards targets and long term outcomes which are unique to every child.

An effective Key Person approach is essential for all children. The key Person is responsible for guiding, monitoring and supporting the physical and emotional development of children in our care and this is especially important for children who have additional needs.

The keyperson or class supervisor complete starting point’s with parents when any child starts at the setting this provides a base line assessment that can then be monitored to show the progress a child has made during their time at the nursery.

At Barbies Playschool and Selwyn House Nursery monitoring of progress is carried out termly by the class supervisor and EYFS leader reflecting on observations that have been added by the child’s key person and parent/carer along with professional judgement. Parent/carers can discuss this progress at parent consultations and review of personalised and targeted plans. By monitoring children’s overall progress we are able to identify areas where a child is in danger of falling behind, enabling practitioners to put strategies, next steps and intervention’s in place to support learning and progress.

All activities at the setting are risk assessed to be age appropriate and differentiated to make them accessible to all children attending the setting. The setting ensures that when trips and outings are planned there is a high staff to child ratio, all trips are risk assessed prior to taking place. The safety and wellbeing of all children is most important to us therefore on trips and outings parent/carers may be asked to support their child if it is seen as the best interest for their child.

The building of the setting is laid out over one level, there are two steps to access the garden and we have wide doorways.

Whenever possible we will make any reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of children, parents or staff. Please let us know if you have any difficulties with accessibility.

When children transfer to another setting or transition to school we liaise with the new setting to share information regarding the child’s individual progress, The Nursery completes a transition form summarising each child’s development and highlighting areas of strength and any areas that may need support, with parent/cares permission this is shared with the child’s new school during a transition meeting. If a child is being supported by a targeted or personalised plan this information is also shared to ensure the school have a good understanding of the child’s needs.

At the setting we invite teachers from local schools to visit the setting and meet the children in an environment they are familiar in before starting their new school. We also plan activities around transition including looking at photo books of the childs new school, practising putting on school uniform during the child’s last term to ensure children are well prepared for a smooth transition to their new school.

At Barbies Playschool and Selwyn House Nursery we regularly monitor children’s progress to ensure the plans and interventions we have in place are supporting the children’s needs to make progress. The Nursery SENCO regularly attends forums, LIFT meetings and training to regularly discuss the strategies used in the setting and ensure they are of the highest quality to meet the needs of the children attend the setting. The SEN Team meet regularly to discuss progress and to identify areas for improvement.

Parent/Carers views and contributions are sought during regular parent consultations and their input into targeted and personalised plans.  All parent feedback is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the setting and to support the setting to continue to provide outstanding practice.
