Special Needs Support

At registration we ask you to complete a ‘Marvellous me’ form which gives us a chance to get to know your child and their particular strengths or areas where they may need extra support. We ask about your child’s interests at home which can inform our planning. When your child starts we assess their starting points in line with a document called Development Matters.

We also complete the Progress Check at 2 which is a statutory assessment that enables a time where any delay in development can be discussed and appropriate next steps identified. The next steps may involve your child’s key person targeting a specific area of development, to plan additional opportunities for your child to gain further experience in this area. This would be written and shared with you through a targeted plan.

We have a SENCo within the setting and a company SENCo to offer any further support, together they ensure that families have the best support and resources to help with your child’s development.

We provide the Key Person approach within our practice and alongside the Early Years Foundation Stage. Your child’s Key Person will be involved from the beginning and will develop strong and positive relationships with yourselves and your child in order to ensure you feel involved and supported.

The Key person will provide you with daily via I Connect, our online platform. There will also be opportunities throughout the year to attend parent's evening to discuss your child’s overall development and collaborate with you on any extra planning or targeted plans.

The Key Person will also build a learning journey for your child which includes photos and observations to show how your child is developing throughout the year.

The EYFS is an educational framework which enables the Key Person to plan for your child. Through observations, assessment and planning for you child in the three prime areas and additional specific areas, the Key Person is able to establish your child’s unique qualities and plan further.

Providing a language rich environment enables children to develop their communication and through observations by the Key Person any additional needs can be identified and built upon. For example language intervention tools such as ‘I Can Talk’ along with ideas and resources provided for home can support the child’s language development all round. In addition links with specialist teachers and occupational therapists enables further support within the wider community to meet each child’s individual needs.

Our teaching starts with creating an environment which enables the children to listen, engage and become involved in their own learning. The rooms provide natural light and the walls are painted in neutral colours to promote a sense of calm, along with soft furnishings and rugs to minimise noise and encourage a sense or well-being. We also provide quiet areas within the room along with small groups times to facilitate all children’s needs throughout the day.

Our staff are trained in early years practice and some have more experience in specialised training to support children with SEND. We use the best practice guidance document to support our teaching and the children’s learning experience.

The role of the SENCo is to provide a lead for staff in relation to SEND and disabilities to make sure procedures are followed, records are kept, and parents are involved. In addition, the SENCo and key Person will liaise with specialist teachers at all times ensuring that any targeted plans are being reviewed to ensure the child’s needs are met. All of our staff are encouraged to complete regular training to ensure any new procedures are adhered too.

Our SEND policy sets out the approach we use to support children. If you child is making insufficient progress through a targeted plan, the SENCo or key Person may discuss with you the need to refer to other services, such as speech and language therapy.

If your child begins to receive support from outside agencies, the targeted plan would be changed to a personalised plan.

An effective Key Person approach is essential for all children. The key Person is responsible for guiding, monitoring and supporting the physical and emotional development of children in our care and this is especially important for children who have additional needs.

You can regualrly view your child's learning and development via our online Famly system along with regular parent consultations throughout the year.

Progress Check at 2 will also be completed to support your child's age and stage of development.

We are committed to delivering an inclusive practice within our setting and to ensure this is embedded we provide regular staff meetings, room meetings and senior meetings which provide all practitioners an opportunity to discuss and share planning and activities with each other to enable any adaptations to be made to meet your child’s needs.

On occasions where we will take trips into the local community, we always provide a thorough risk assessment ensuring all health and safety provisions are in place.

The open plan environment within the nursery enables easy access for children. A ramp can be provided for any additional steps to access the main entrance or outside areas.

Whenever possible we will make any reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of children, parents or staff. Please let us know if you have any difficulties with accessibility.

When children transfer to another setting or transition to school we liaise with the new setting to share information regarding the child’s individual development, which would be a transition report.

All relevant paperwork will be shared with consent. We also provide dressing up to support the child through familiarity of the nursery/school uniform along with photos too.

We feel it’s important to gain feedback and evaluations of the service we provide. To accommodate this, we provide parents/carers with questionnaire’s regarding their experience of the nursery.

In addition, we gain parent’s views through targeted and personalise plans to ensure they are involved in the overall development of their child. We ensure that parents are involved throughout the whole process with regards to LIFT meetings and specialist teacher visits to support them every step of the way.

To register your child at the nursery you would need to contact the nursery manager and complete an online registration pack, and book settling in session's which can be at a time that is convenient to you and your child.

We initially offer 3 settle sessions, however these can be increased dependant on each child’s individual needs, which can be discussed between parents and the nursery manager. During this time a more detailed discussion can take place and additional support can be offered in the form of additional funding.

Our SEND policy provides the context for supporting children through the graduated approach and our complaints procedure is displayed within the nursery. Copies of all policies can be viewed on our website.

Within the nursery we provide and ‘Open Door’ policy, comment box and questionnaire’s where we welcome constructive feedback.
