Special Needs Support
How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?
- Westside Pre-school has a highly experienced team able to identify, refer and support children and their families with a wide range of differing needs i.e. ASD, speech & language, global delay. Staff use a number of different methods which can include observations, information provided by parents, health visitors and other agencies, use of the progress track at two, the ecat tools along with a range of assessment records to identify any child that may need additional support while at the pre-school.
How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?
- Through out their time at Westside, parents are encouraged to be involved within their child's learning and development, If at any point we become concerned about any aspects of your child, we would firstly speak with the parents, following on we would keep the parents involved using daily informal conversations, update meetings, your child's learning journey, parents meetings(held 3 times per year) and your involvement within targeted or personalised plans (Should the need arise). In some cases permission may be requested from parents to enable the pre-school to request further support from outside agencies.
How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?
-
Westside works in partnership with parents to help children to learn and develop. Westside plans for the individual child using the child's interest as a starting point.
-
The child's key person will plan for each individual child using knowledge of the child gathered from observation and information obtained from the parents, next steps are created to support the child towards the next stage of development. Should the keyperson idenifty that the child requires additional support a Targeted or personalised plan will be written based around your child’s needs using advice and strategies from outside agencies as well as our own knowledge of the child, we ensure targets are realistic and specific to every child.
What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?
- Staff follow specific recommendations from outside professional’s including the use of visual supports, Makaton signing, time lines, now & next boards. The pre-school offers a variety of interventions such as one-one intervention, Black sheep narrative, Mr tongue and Clever hands.
What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?
-
Westside Pre-school work closely with all our parents and carers to build strong relationships. The pre-school Manager, Senco and the augmented support lead are always available to offer advice and support for families, this is provided in many ways from discussing techniques and strategies to support children's behaviour and development, refering to outside agencies and completing any relevant paper work to ensure all professionals are involved for the best possible outcomes for the child.
-
All staff are all paediatric first aid training which includes the use of a epi-pen and inhalers, Staff are experienced and confident in the administration of medicines and do so on a regular basis.
How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?
- Your child’s key person will carry out planned activities linked to your child's likes and interests, observations are completed and linked to the EYFS using an online interative learning diary, parents are able to view and interact within their child's learning and development. Parents are invited to attend parent evenings 3 times per year where your child's development and progress is discussed, where Targeted and personalised plans are in place they are reviewed termly (6 times per year) and parents are involved in this process.
How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?
- Where possible all activities provided will be accessible to all children, for some planned trips parents maybe asked to accompany their child.
How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?
- Westside pre-school is a purpose built setting to cater for children and adults with disabilities. The pre-school is all on one level which allows access to wheelchair users through wide doors, a disabled child size toliet and free flow acces into the garden area.
How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?
- Westside pre-school staff meet with the teachers from the local schools at a tranistion meeting usually held in early June, the aim of the meeting is to provide information that will support the child as they enter into reception class. Westside provide tinformation to new setting in the form a report. If child has SEN/additional needs a meeting is held with the school's reception teacher the Senco from Westside and the Specialist teacher to ensure every thing is in place before the child starts at school.
How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?
- Parents are involved within each step of the SEN process, the targeted and personalised plans ask for the parents views and feedback.
Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?
- Parents should contact the pre-school by telephone, email or facebook and arrange for a time to view or just pop in. Staff are avaiable to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child's development, behaviour or additional requirements.
What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
- At Westside Pre-school there is always a manager avaliable to speak with you. Parents are able to contact the manager directly by telephone, facebook, email or drop into the Pre-school office. The best pre-school.
Both my children attended Westside Pre-School, they absolutely loved it which made me as a parent feel relaxed about it. Nice open spaces for children to play and they always enjoyed the day trips to the park, the woods or bus trips into town. All staff members were so lovely and helpful and attentive to the childrens needs.
Just the best around!
What can I say about Westside, Well first of all the staff are absolutely brilliant with the children. With Westside there is also room for the parents to be involved, like fathers day BBQ - Mothers Day Tea and cakes. The wonderful Christmas nativities. The children get home learning, baking, reading, gardening to name all but a few. The son loves being at nursery, so that tells me he is at the right place. Great job Westside your a credit to the Faversham area.
Amazing
Westside Pre-school really is amazing and certainly deserves more credit. We have been attending for last 5 years and have always felt supported, well looked after and that the staff generally care. During lockdown Westside have kept in contact with all children, sent thoughtful weekly tasks. My children have both learnt so much from attending Westside, whilst playing, we will all miss going there. The interactive learning journey is great for keeping up with what your child is doing and lovely to see what they are doing each day. If you have a clingy child like me! They handle this fantastically, offering reassurance and sending WhatsApp messages within minutes to let you know all is calm! Westside pre-school really is an amazing team of people.
