As a setting we have a key person approach. We follow a system of observation, monitoring and tracking through the early years foundation stage (EYFS) http://www.foundationyears.org.uk/files/2012/03/Development-Matters-FINAL-PRINT-AMENDED.pdf.


If there is an area which shows concern the key person would refer to the best practice guidance. To ensure that a universal level of provision is met. The nursery SENCo will be informed and may implement personalised/individual strategies to support the individual children. We also complete a progress check at 2 years and a termly report on your child’s development. We also offer six monthly parent consultation. We are able to show the progress of each child, and each year group through our online program which enables us to evaluate how well we are providing for our children.


If the setting is finding it difficult to be able to provide for the needs for your child, then we will contact you and with your consultation and agreement external agencies, such as speech and language therapists will be approached.


All observations are available on parent zone. If you do not have access to this, we will print these for you. On Parent zone is also a record of any meals, sleep and daily routines which your child has had while in the setting this is published on a daily basis. This app also gives you access to share photographs, comments and observations from you regarding your child’s time at home. This will also feed into our planned targets and activities for them.


When your child arrives at the setting, we will ask you how they are and when you return to collect them, we will feed back to you the activities and experiences which your child has had during their time with us.


Although, we follow the stages of the EYFS. We plan for each child individually, basing the environment and the activities around what they already know and enjoy.


We work very close with several outside agencies to ensure that any children who need extra input are receiving the most skilful assistance we can provide. The specialist teacher, speech and language and occupation therapists are regular and welcome visitors to our setting. We are continually providing and attending training for our SENCo staff and for all staff, to ensure that we are sensitive to children’s needs and how to develop their needs. We have highly qualified staff who will implement visual support, one to one focused play and learning time. We will work closely with families and parents to ensure that we provide a merged service.


Our building is a single storey building, with double doors to all garden areas, The toilets are height appropriate which assist all levels of toileting ability.


When the children are moving into a new room, we will spend ideally a month getting them use to the new environment. When they have their big move into school, we will develop a positive attitude surrounding this, ensuring that we help to get your child excited for their new journey. We work in depth at helping your child realise the skills they have which are needed for school life. We contact all new reception teachers to arrange for them to come in to meet the children here and complete in-depth reports to send to the schools so that they have an insight into the wonderful personalities which we are preparing.


We are an active part of the area SENCo we make a big effort at attending lift meetings to discuss any concerns. Our work with other professionals and parent endeavour to provide the best for every child.

Description

We work extremely close with professionals to ensure that all children are included and welcomed in our provision.

We may make a request for support for the child and the family through Kent's Front Door scheme. This enables the corect professional to be informed and directed to the family.

We have four Senco's who are able to signpost parents to achieving the best support for their family. 

Many staff are trained to ensure that they understand the importance of inclusion for those children who need additional support. Our aim is to ensure that we have an environment which enables the same provision for all. Sometimes we may make adjustments to the environment but we hope these do not make anyone feel singled out, as we believe all children are special and we aim for all to feel part of our community.

Special Needs Support

Through discussions with parents, observations and assessments our team ensure that all children are provided with the best care and opportunities which we can offer them.

Continuous training of our staff enables us to keep up to date procedures and policies in our practice.

If a parent has any concerns about their child, they can speak to their key person or any of the team in the office.

If it becomes apparent that the child needs support in an area then we follow the best practice guidance which helps us to put activities into place to help develop these areas. If external agencies are needed with the support then we will with the parents make the relevant referrals.

 

We will then attend meetings and appointments in order that we can still offer the best support.

We work closely with our parents who speak other languages to help make new parents with English as their second language feel welcome and understood.

We make it our pleasure and practitice to speak to each parent/ carer either on arrival or collection to nursery. This will enable you to share any concerns you have regarding your child.

We will speak to all parents in the first instance and explain which line of support we feel will be needed.

 

We will with parents make the necessary requests for support, and share targeted and personalised plans to ensure that the support around the child is smooth.

 

We will meet external professionals with the parents to ensure that the advice being given is understood by all.

 

Early Years Pupil premium, DAF and SENIF support can be awarded to the setting to assist with extra input, sometimes this maybe in terms of money, this will be used with consultation of the parents to provide support as best possible.

The Early years foundation stage curriculum is put into place to assist practitioners with their planning and assessments, our aim is to provide activities for all children suitable for their individual likes and needs. This will ensure that each child is being accommodated as fully as possible, this will enable them to feel important which will heighten their wellbeing and increase their self-confidence.

We also  carry out ECAT- every child is a talker assessments to enable us to get a true picture of the child's language skills, This seperates into the following headings, Speaking, Social communication, listening and understanding.

 

We provide specialist directed activities for those children who need that little extra help. Through writing targeted and personalised plans or through extended planning we aim to support development in all areas of the child.

 

We have a very close and knowledgeable team, resulting in there always being a practitioner available to discuss with parents any concerns they have. individual meetings are held twice a year with parents and key person, and other meetings are made as often as needed when extra support is needed.

 

We have parent zone ap. which provides parents with the chance to send us observations and comment on the observations and assessments which we have made.

 

We provide small group activities for children who speak English as an additional language, we make sure that all understand that their wellbeing must be observed before expectations of English speaking will take place. We have sheets for parents to write home words on to enable practitioners to use key words to help the child feel happy in the setting and their needs are met. The practitioners provide labelled pictures, routines and signs to enable children to feel safe and confident to communicate if they do not wish to or are not at the speaking stage.

We have 4 Senco members of staff, alongside our well experienced team. Most issues Pastoral, medical and social can be supported in the setting or outside agencies can be sought to offer the family and setting advice.

 

We work closely with our children's centre staff. With our specialist teaching staff at St Nicholas school. Our Kent County Council support advisors. Local speech and language specialists, deaf and hearing impairment advisors and occupational therapists.

 

We will pass on any information to new settings, schools and other professionals any information regarding the children to assist with smooth transitions.

 

When targeted and personalised plans are made they will be done with the information known about the child's likes and interests. If able to, at all times we will get the child to input into the plans.

Assessments are done termly and Targeted and personalised plans are updated as decided at when the plans are completed. These will be completed by the key person, and then audited by the Senco's and Early years teacher.

 

If changes happen then plans can be adapted or extended to suit.

All children are invited to our trips, extra staff will be bought into to help with additional support. Practitioners will endeavour to arrange a visit initially to risk assess the environment. Parents will be invited to come along also.

 

The environment is set out so activities and experiences can be enjoyed by all children as and when they choose. If physical restrictions mean that a child cannot access these then staff will adjust the environment to suit.

 

Hearing, sign language and environment the child training has been completed by most of the practitioners. The gardens are open for all to enjoy, some hurdles maybe obvious, however children are helped to overcome these.

We have wheel chair friendly doorways, and toilets which can be used to allow independence and dignity for most children. We aim to allow accessibility for all with independence.

On transition to school or another setting, We will do our best to have a visit into the setting of the child's new teacher. Will provide transition documents and a one page profile to ensure that the new key person as some insight to our knowledge of the child.

Specific meetings are arranged for children who have additional needs with the SENCO from the new setting they are transferring to.

We arrange a school leavers meeting to support parents with this transition and the skills which are needed to ensure that their child feels confident.

Each year we ask parents to complete a parental questionnaire. The results are shared and any points needing adjusting are put into an action plan and addressed.

 

We speak regularly to SEN specialists in order that we are providing correctly and to suit the needs of the community.

We have regular Senco meetings and senior meetings in order that we keep plans and actions up to date.

We attend regular training and lift meetings to extend and keep up to date with our statutory requirements and good practice. We provide in house training and support for all practitioners as often as possible.
