Local Offer

We provide childcare for 2 to 5 year old children who have special educational needs or disability.

Special Needs Support

We ask the parents to complete a Registration form which gives us a chance to get to know the child, their particular strengths and areas where they may need extra support.

When a child starts with us, we assess their starting points in line with Development matters. We ask the parents to complete the progress check at 2. This helps us to identify any delay in development, which is then discussed and appropriate next steps identified.

We inform the parents in various ways:

  • daily informal contact
  • meetings with parents at their request throughout the year
  • My Montessori Child which shows photos and observations of how the child is developing through the year
  • parents meetings where we let the parents know how the child is progressing and any additional support required
  • collaboration with parents on any extra planning we put in place, e.g., targeted plan.

Communication and Language

  • providing a language rich environment tailored to the needs of the children
  • using targeted small group activities
  • using a language intervention programme
  • providing ideas and resources for parents to use at home
  • working in line with speech and language therapy advice

Personal, social and emotional development

  • linking with local specialist provision, advisers and health and voluntary sector providers for advice and support
  • attending specialist information sessions
  • targeted individual or small group activities to promote well-being and resilience

Physical Development

  • building links with specialist therapists
  • offering an accessible environment and lay-out to meet the children's needs
  • demonstrating awareness of environmental factors that have a sensory impact on children
  • frequent and regual access to outdoor spaces

We provide an environment that enable children to listen , engage and give full involvement to their learning. The room benefits from natural light. The walls are painted in neutral colours to promote a sense of calm; this is further enhanced by soft furnishings and rugs to minimise noise and encourage a sense of well-being.

We have a wide range of resources appropriate to support the children's development at all levels. We make sure specialist equipment is obtained if necessary.

Teaching Strategies

All our staff are trained in early years practice and Montessori method of teaching. We use various teaching strategies to support children with additional needs or learning difficulties such as visual resources and Makaton signing.

If we observe that a child is not making sufficient progress through a targeted plan, we discuss with the parents the need to refer to other services, such as speech and language therapy. If a child begins to receive support from outside agencies, the targeted plan is changed to a personalised plan.

We also make referral to the Specialist Teaching and Learning Service through LIFT after obtaining parent's consent. If the referral is accepted, additional advice and guidance is provided through a specialist teacher.

We monitor the children's progress through My Montessori Child. Parents are given access to it so that they can follow their child's progress and view the EYFS profile.

We hold meetings with parents once every term where the key person discusses the child's progress with the parents. These meetings give an opportunity to the parents to talk about any concerns that they may have.

We ensure that any planned activities are suitable and adapted to meet the needs of children with additional needs or SEND.

The building has wheelchair access. We have an open plan environment which ensures ease of movement inside the classroom. Our outdoor area is suitable for children using wheelchairs and frames.

We provide a transition report and relevant paperwork (with parent's consent) to the new setting or school.

We do activities such as dressing-up in school uniform, photo books about local schools.

We plan meetings with the school and encourage visits from the school to our setting.

We assess the overall effectiveness of our SEN provision through

  • LIFT meetings
  • SENCo meetings
  • staff meetings
  • evaluation of training needs
  • regular parent meetings
  • parent questionnaire
  • review of policies and procedures

The parents should contact the Manager

We welcome suggestions from the parents /carers and solicit their constructive feedback through questionnaires.

We have a complaints procedure which is displayed on our notice board.

All our policies and procedures are available on our website and in My Montessori Child.
