Special Needs Support
How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?
I can cater for all children with special needs in my setting. When you first start with me, I will send you an "all about me form", this will help me understand any areas your child may need more support in and any areas we may need to concentrate on more.
At 2 years old I will complete a progress check, you can take the progress check to your health visitor so you can highlight any concerns your child might have with them.
How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?
I will support you and your child with daily updates about what we have done and how your child is progressing. Opportunities to discuss any concerns you or I may have during the year and set up any extra planning if needed.
How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?
The EYFS is an educational framework which allows me to plan for your child. I observe, assess and plan for your child in the three prime areas.
Communication and language
Personal. social and emotional development
Physical development
By using this frame work to help me, I will assess what your child is able to do and encourage and support them in all of these areas.
What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?
Working as a childminder puts me in a good position to ensure that I can tailor activities to ensure that your child gets the most learning from both planned activities and from help with routines in the home.
My house has the benefit of a home from home setting with as much nature light as possible.
What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?
If your child isn't progressing, I will discuss this with to see what plans we could put into place. If we don't see any improvement in their progress then we can discuss if there is a need to refer to other services such as speech and language.
Your consent is required in order for a referral to be made ton a specialist teaching and learning service. If the referral is accepted a specialist teacher would visit your child to provide additional advice.
How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?
I use an online system called Babysdays. When your child starts with me, you will be given a login to access your childs information. Babysdays will hold all your childs observations and photos, each observation is linked to the EYFS so that I can then track your childs progress. Working from home and being a smaller setting, I'm able to have more time with my parents at hand over in the evenings.
How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?
We regularly go on trips to the park, woods, library and the beach. When a new child comes to my setting, I go over my risk assessments to take into account any new conditions that may cause children to be at risk.
How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?
wheelchairs can access my front door.
How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?
I will do whatever I can to make the transition to another setting run as smoothly as possible. We can walk past the new setting, take the child to settling in sessions, have books about the new setting etc.
How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?
I can provide annual questionnaires to my parents.
Keep my training up to date.
Regular communication with parents/carers.
Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?
You should contact myself Gemma on the number or email provided. You will then be welcome to come round for a visit and walk around my setting, if you talk up the place you would be offered some settling sessions before your little one was to start with me.
What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
I always welcome feedback from parents as this helps me to know what they're happy with and also areas i may need to improve on. I have a compliments and complaints book that is accessible for parents to write in. I often receive messages from parents thanking me for caring for their child just like I would my own.
