Lilliput Pre-school

Lilliput Pre-school is a well-established Pre-school.  We provide high quality childcare at an affordable price for our local community.  We are located behind All Saints Church, Military Road in Canterbury.  The building is purpose built and is fully accessible. 


Lilliput Pre-school is a registered charity and has a parent committee.


We accept children aged 2 years - 4 years old. 


We are a term time only setting. We offer free for two funding, 3&4 free early education hours and the extended 30 hours entitlement to eligible families.

Description

The Lilliput Pre-school Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) is Jeanie

The role of the SENCO is to ensure that children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) within the Pre-school receive the support they need.

The Key person’s work closely with Jeanie to identify any areas of concern.

 Your child’s Key person will liaise with you if they have concerns about your child.

 If you have any concerns regarding your child’s development please see your child’s Key person or Jeanie.

We have links with other professionals including; The Speech Therapy Department, The Health Visiting Team, The Children Centre and the District SEN team.

Special Needs Support

We identify children with Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and additional needs through

  • Information from parents such
  • Development reviews
  • Obtaining information from other settings or agencies the child attends or has previously attended. 
  • Observations using the Early Years Foundation Stage framework (EYFS) as guidance and a range of assessment records.
  • Discussion or meeting with the setting SENCO
  • Using resources such as the EYFS/best practice guidance documents

We keep parents / carers informed about their child and how they are supported through

  • Communication/meeting with the Key person and SENCO
  • Learning journals
  • Written assessments (three times a year)
  • Individual/Target plans

We adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum (EYFS) for individual children’s needs by

  • Individual planning and next steps for each child
  • Targeted and personalised planning
  • Adaptions to the environment where possible

We use different teaching strategies (for children with additional needs or learning difficulties) such as

  • Individual planning for each child, including the characteristics of effective learning
  • The SENCO liaises with other professionals & outside agencies for advice or recommendations
  • Range of visual and audial support materials
  • Individual and small group activities and also quiet areas

Additional support is provided by the setting for those with additional needs or SEND through

  • Close working relationship between key persons, SENCO and parents
  • Monitoring
  • Referrals to any applicable services and agencies

We monitor children’s progress and involve parents in this by

  • Observations
  • Summative assessments
  • Review of targeted plans, progress tracker and ‘my story’ reports
  • Regular formal and informal opportunities to discuss progress

We endeavour to include children with additional needs or SEND in the same activities as other children, including trips, through

  • Regular reviews with parents and staff
  • Evaluation of the way planning is differentiated
  • Research and risk assessments in advance of any trips

 

Our building is accessible for children with mobility difficulties/wheelchair users

  • Classroom and outside is on one level
  • Wide doorways
  • Ramped entrance
  • Accessible toilet facilities

A child’s transition to a new setting or school is supported by

  • Assessment reports and Target plans
  • Relevant paperwork and information passed on to the next provision (with consent)
  • Activities to support transition, school uniform examples, bags, photo books and discussions
  • The new setting or school are invited to the setting
  • Meetings with the new school/ setting and other professionals
  • Informal ‘chats’ with other parents that have children currently attending the chosen school.
  • Transition meetings with the setting/school SENCO’s/teacher

The setting assesses the overall effectiveness of its SEND provision by:  

  • Attending regular SENCO/LIFT (Local Inclusion Forum Team) meetings
  • Seeking advice from specialist teams
  • Collaboration meetings
  • Discussions with staff, parent/carer's and other professionals
  • Training
  • Staff meetings
  • Reviewing the SEF

Parent and Carers can take part in the evaluation through

  • Regular discussions with their child's key person and the SENCO
  • Contributing to their child's targeted plan or next steps
  • Parent meetings with the key person to review their child's progress
  • Leaving comments in the suggestion box
  • Completing questionnaires

  • A member of staff will outline the admission procedure and add your details to our waiting list
  • We offer Keyboards within the classroom, for parents and carers to leave information for their child's Key Person.  In the main entrance / foyer we have a suggestion box.  Parents are also given a questionnaire annually.
  • Key Persons are available for parents to speak to if they have any concerns, and the Manager or Deputy Manger are also on site if required.  Our complaints procedure is located in the policy file in the main entrance accessible to parents.
