Special Needs Support

How do you identify children/young people with special educational needs?
We arrange a meeting before the child starts with their parent/carer to gather in-depth relevant information. On entry to the nursery, if there is a concern raised by Key workers, additional assessment and observations will be made by a member of the SEN team. Information gathered is evaluated and then shared sympathetically with the parent/carer.

How will I be able to raise any concerns I may have?
We have an 'open door' policy and the SENCo (or assistant) is available most days.

If the setting / school / college is specialist which types of special educational need do you cater for?  N/A

Who will oversee and plan the educational programme and who will be working with my child/young person and how often?
Our SENCo will speak to you if there are any concerns. Your child's keyworker and SEN assistant will work with your child on a regular basis depending on the area of need and frequency required. Targets /personalised plans are reviewed at regular intervals, depending on the area of need and the requirement of the target.

We plan for each child individually and will make adaptations to the environment if necessary. We use targeted and personalised plans to target each child's particular needs.

Due to the large size of the nursery, your child will be allocated to the most appropriate classroom for their needs.

We use an individual targetted approach, Makaton, visual timetables, labelling, Now and next boards, visual prompts, activity choice cards, big books, timetabling, small group work.
We also have quiet areas in each room, a sensory room, multi sensory box, screening resources, OWLing strategies, ECAT, Hanen.
We also liaise closely with a large number of relevant outside agencies.

See above.

We conduct regular observations, (both formal and adhoc); summative assessments are gathered each double term; targeted plans are reviewed as necessary.
Regular formal and informal opportunities to discuss progress are offered to parents. If you share your reports from professionals, we use them to inform our practice

Generally, Makaton in used throughout the nursery with all children to aid inclusivity, and we adapt resources as needed to aid inclusion.
When on outings, we do a risk assessment and research in advance if any adaptations are needed. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children during outings, or staff will take them in small groups appropriate to their needs.

Internally, the nursery is on one level and wheelchair access is available from the rear of the building. All internal doors have wide access.

We keep observations on your child to inform our report writing on transition to a new setting. Each year, we invite the reception teacher (and SENCo if needed) from each child's Primary School to see the children in a familiar environment.

We attend SENCo forum /LIFT meetings for guidance, advice and training. Staff access relevant external training to a child's needs as needed e.g. ASD / Down Syndrome / Diabetes etc.

We ask parents via regular surveys / questionnaires for their opinions and we have a feed back form which is available at any time to complete.

A SEN information board for parents is located in our entrance hall.

We review our self evaluation on a regular basis and change items as needed.

Please call or email us.
