Early Birds Nursery at Chilmington Green Primary School.


Chilmington Early Birds Nursery is part of Chilmington Green Primary School and welcomes children from the age of 2 – 4 years. 

The lower nursery is led by Miss Smith, a qualified teacher, and supported by a team of experienced nursery nurses. 

The upper nursery is led by Miss Walker, a qualified teacher, and supported by a team of experienced nursery nurses.

Our session options are 5 mornings 8.30am-11.30am, 5 afternoons 12.30pm-3.30pm or 5 full days 8.30am-3.30pm.

*Please note that due to popularity, places are reviewed, ranked and offered in line with our admissions policy with sibling and staff children taking precedent.  Should any places remain available after the above allocations, we then offer based on distance; with children closest to furthest being allocated first and foremost. Successful distances vary year on year depending on demand.  All children are welcomed to join our consideration list but we stress that being on this list does not guarantee that a place will be offered. 

We accept 15 or 30 hours free each week! Hours outside of this allowance are cahrged at £5.50 per hour

How we support children:

The national curriculum sets out what should be taught at Year 1 upwards. Before this, (Nursery and Reception) it is called the ‘Foundation Stage’ as it is about laying the foundations for future learning.

Our inside and outside nursery environments are carefully planned to allow the children to engage in a wide range of learning opportunities where we promote learning through play as the best way for children to develop important skills, such as social skills, independence, curiosity, and problem solving.

There are seven areas of the EYFS curriculum and in the Nursery, our main area of focus is on the prime areas, as these are the areas that really set the children up ready for reception.

The prime areas are:

Physical development

Jumping, climbing, balancing, fine motor skills, developing hand and finger strength and coordination. We set up obstacle courses outside and have use of the school hall to have weekly PE sessions. We also use play dough, enjoy craft activities, constructions, messy play, and puzzles.

Personal, social and emotional

We help the children learn how to make relationships, become more confident, and learn to manage their feelings and behaviour. We use role play as a great way to practise these skills!

Communication and language

Language development is hugely important and is one of our main focusses in the nursery. Learning to listen, pay attention, understand instructions and questions, developing confidence and the ability to speak and communicate with others. We share lots of stories and encourage children to use props to act out the stories!

Developing independence and healthy practises is also important – we encourage our children to put on their own shoes, use the toilet and washing their hands themselves.

We also support children in the four specific areas:

Literacy – (learning to read and write)

We give the children lots of opportunities for mark making – paint brushes, pens, crayons, chalk etc and also use singing to develop children’s awareness of rhyme – which helps when they learn to read. Studies how shown in the Early Years the child’s awareness of rhyme is a good predictor of how easily they will learn to read!

Maths

Maths is about counting, calculating and developing an awareness of shapes and measures. Accurate number counting and number recognition is achieved through repetition, so we try to incorporate it in as many activities as possible throughout the day.  

Understanding the world

This is to do with finding out about people, places, technology and the environment – this is an area that can really excite and motivate the children! As a school nursery, we are lucky that we can be involved in lots of whole school opportunities, like visits from a variety of interesting people!

Expressive arts and design

Exploring different mediums and materials and developing imagination and creativity. We support children by providing activities such as storytelling, dancing, music, role play and arts and crafts!

How will you know how your child is getting on?

Each child is assigned a key person which will be one of the nursery team. Having a key person means that each child has a special adult in the setting and over time, the adult can really get to know the child and tune into their needs, moods and interests. The adults can then use their knowledge to provide individualised support for the children. Although the children will have one key person, all the team will work with them to support them on their learning journey.

We use ‘Tapestry’ online learning journals to document children’s learning. ‘Tapestry’ is an exciting way of building a strong link between home and school. Families can login to view their child’s observations and also add their own observations from home.  

One parent said,“It’s great being able to see what my child has been up to throughout the day. We look through his pictures together in the evening and he tells me all about the photos/activities that he has been doing. It helps me to praise him at home for his great work. He doesn’t give too much away, when I ask how his day has been, but prompting him with photos that have been posted, reminds him and gets him chatting away!” 

We have found that sharing learning with families in this way has helped to develop their understanding and appreciation of the potential of child led learning opportunities. Many parents look at the observations with their children at home and this can lead to further learning opportunities where the children talk about their learning, consolidating and reflecting on their activities.

Special Needs Support

How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND? 

Often parents can be aware that their children may have additional needs before they begin nursery. Our settling in arrangements are flexible to accommodate individual needs. We want to know as much as possible about every child before they start with us so we can provide them with the best support from day one.

Before children start parents and their children are invited to a number of settling in sessions. These sessions are a great opportunity for the children to become familiar with their new nursery environment and the adults that are going to be looking after them. Parents are invited to meet with their child’s key person or if appropriate, our SENCO, to share up to date information with us about their child’s interests, developing skills and personal care needs.

Sometimes children’s additional needs may become apparent over time and if you have concerns about your child’s progress or development then the first step would be to talk to your child’s key person or class teacher.

As we play alongside the children each session we get to know them really well and identify their strengths and any areas they may need more support in. The progress of all pupils is monitored and recorded each term. Through this process, pupils that are not making the expected progress are quickly identified and strategies are planned that will address their area of difficulty. We are able to work with other professionals such as the Speech and Language Team, Occupational Therapists and Health Visitors to help us identify and provide the best support for children and their families.

How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported? 

We know children make the best progress when the nursery and their families work together. Each day staff are available to chat to parents about how things are going. Sometimes parents or the nursery staff may want to have a more in depth or private conversation and this can always be requested and arranged. We hold parents evenings throughout the year.

How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs? 

In the nursery we learn through play. The environment is carefully planned and organised into different areas so that children can take part in a range of experiences. Every session children will have time to move around the nursery and choose their own activities. During this time the adults play alongside the children and ‘teach’ them through modelling, asking, questioning, explaining, guiding, showing, suggesting, challenging and encouraging. Adults who know the children well are able to support the children in ways personal to them.

What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties? 

Each child is an individual and different strategies will work for different children. We have a great working relationship with a range of professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and the Specialist Teaching and Learning. We value their specialist advice.

We enjoy professional development opportunities and frequently attend training and networking session to keep our knowledge and skills up to date. We strive to find the best support for all the children in our nursery.

What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips? 

Often with small adaptions or forward planning, we can find ways to include all of our children in our activities. The nursery caters for children from 2-4 years of ages so we are used to adapting activities to meet the needs of a children at different stages in their development.
When planning any school trips, risk assessments are carried out and planning put in place, taking into account all the children needs.

How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users? 

Our brand new school opened in October 2022 and the building is suitable for wheelchair users. We have a lift, disabled toilet and spacious corridors.

How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school? 

Early Birds Nursery is part of Chilmington Green Primary School and most of our nursery children move up to our Reception class. The children have the opportunity to use different areas of the school such as the hall, library and playground whilst in the nursery.

A ‘Rising 4s’ group runs every Wednesday afternoon. Parents and children are invited to join the Reception class and engage in different activities each week.

When children transition to a new class there are opportunities for staff and parents to meet and discuss children’s individual needs and aspirations for the future.

What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints? 

Each term we send home a ‘Parents Update Sheet’ where parents can record comments or ask any questions they may have. If you ever have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to speak to us in person. We are continually evaluating our practices to ensure we are providing the most effective provision. We welcome any comments or suggestions, which could help us to do this.
