Special Needs Support

We have a team of very experienced, qualified staff who are able to identify and support children who may need extra help in a particular area of development.

We regularly observe all the children in the setting and if we feel your child needs extra support in a particular area we will arrange a meeting to discuss this with you. In some cases further support is requested from the specialist teaching team (with parental consent). Parents are invited to attend meetings to discuss their child's progress every 6-8 weeks.

At Rain or Shine the staff are very experienced and are able to adapt the activities we offer to meet the needs of all the children taking part. The forest school ethos is to follow the child's individual interests and we support each child to make progress from where they are when they join us.

At universal level (for all children) we have a visual timetable for the daily routine. Most staff have recently trained in Makaton so we use signs as well as verbal communication when talking to children. Some children benefit from other visual support too.

If required a targeted plan or personalised plan will be put in place after discussion with the parents. A regular review meeting will take place every 6-8 weeks.

At the end of each term a report is produced which shows all the observations and photos of the child, what they have been doing and how they have progressed.

At the end of each day, parents are sent a written account of what the children have been up to and the activities on offer - often includes the child's voice - and photos of the child from that day as well.

We use an online childcare software package called Babysdays which also enables parents to communicate with us by uploading photos, recording observations and commenting on what we have recorded.

If your child has additional needs or SEND then please contact the provider to explain what extra support they will need. Because we are an outdoor setting the most important thing is that your child is safe while they are in our care - that means that they understand to stay within the forest school boundary.

In some cases we may be able to apply for extra funding in order to give your child 1-1 support. Our ratios are favourable with 1 adult to 5 children anyway but we are unable to provide 1-1 support without additional funding.

We do not have a building as we are a fully outdoor forest school. It would therefore be difficult for a child with mobility difficulties or a wheelchair user to access our provision due to the uneven ground and mud.

We pride ourselves on working with other settings and schools to ensure that transitions go as smoothly as possible. We are in contact with a lot of the local schools and many of the reception teachers visit the children on site during the summer term to help with those transitions.

All parents are regularly asked to complete a satisfaction survey about their own and their child's experience at Rain or Shine. Parents of children with SEN also have regular 6-8 week meetings in which their views are taken into consideration.

All parents are regularly asked to complete a satisfaction survey about their own and their child's experience at Rain or Shine. Compliments and complaints can be uploaded on Babysdays and we have a comprehensive Complaints Policy should parents feel the need to complain.
