Local Offer

At Rising Stars our vision for any child with special educational needs is the same for all children. We strive for each child to achieve the best, to grow into confident, engaging learners focusing on the fun and enjoyment of the here and now. We offer a wide variety of stimulating activities based on your children’s interests in a nurturing and loving environment. All of our activities are adapted to suit all individual learning styles and developmental needs.

We have a dedicated trained special educational needs coordinator (SENDCo), and each of our staff has relevant knowledge and experience to support the children. If a child attending our nursery identifies as having special educational needs our goal is to work in partnership with parents, and families to ensure the right and relevant support is gained, and consistent progress for each child is achieved.

Special Needs Support

Our qualified staff and trained SENDCo work together with families to identify needs. We identify children through nursery inductions, settlings visits, unique stories, two year checks, progress checks and summative assessments.

Parents/carers are kept informed of their child's development in a variety of ways. In-depth handovers by the key person are given at the end of each session. We also provide access to children's online learning journals for all parents which are regularly updated with observations and development from the child's key person. We offer two parent evenings per year, and we also have a parent forum which all parents are encouraged and welcome to join. Opportunities to meet with the nursery's SENDCo are available upon request.

We will adapt the curriculum in any way we can to support our children. This includes providing small group activities in an enabling environment. Identified children will also have a targeted and/or personalised plan completed by the SENDCo and key person.

We adopt a very robust key person approach where each key person is responsible for recording and monitoring each individual child's development. We work collaboratively with other agencies for example, speech and language therapists, children's centres, specialist teachers and health visitors. Staff use visual supports and are learning Makaton signing to support children's different learning styles. Staff participate in regular training to update their knowledge. Children with special educational needs are supported by the Best Practice Guidance which is regularly updated by the SENDCo and key person.

We provide additional support dependent on each child’s needs. We offer families regular meetings with our SENDCo, support and guidance on accessing courses or completing SEND paperwork. We complete relevant referrals to specialist services for children, and make sure staff are kept up to date with recent knowledge and guidelines.

Progress is monitored through observation and assessment. Each child is closely monitored by their key person termly. Next steps are provided for each child, which are then shared with parents, to support, encourage and ensure appropriate progress. Children are also monitored through the two year check.

We have a strong commitment to inclusive practice, and encourage all children to take part in activities. We have adaptations on our planning forms, and also adapt and change activities or the environment as needed, which is then reflected on our 'in the moment' planning. During nursery trips we ensure a higher adult to child ratio, and encourage all parents to join us on trips out.

Our nursery is in a purpose built children’s centre, which is open plan and has ease of movement, including all wheelchair accessible doors and ramps. The nursery is on the ground floor and has free flow access to the outside area, with a ramp down from the decking.

We will ensure that each child’s learning journey is up to date, and each individual child has the opportunity to meet within the setting, their new school teacher. We attend any relevant meetings to help support the child’s transition to school. We ensure all relevant paperwork is passed on to new teachers and SENDCo.

We assess our overall effectiveness through parent questionnaires, staff meetings, SENDCo forum meetings, staff training, policy and procedure reviews and meetings with parents.

The manager or deputy manager will be happy to answer any questions and show you around. We encourage all prospective parents to look around the setting before signing their child up.

We send out parent questionnaires annually, and hold parents evening twice a year. We have an open door policy where parents are free to come in and discuss anything with us throughout the year.
