Special Needs Support

On your child's first settle session we will ask you to complete an all about me form alongside your child's key person, so that they can understand more about your child and help them to settle in the pre-school.  Two weeks after your child has settled with us we will complete a baseline assessment to show their starting points in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage.  This then enables us to identify and plan for your child's individual learning, as tracking is done every two terms it will identify if your child needs extra support in a specific area of learning.

Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCo) are Beckie Francis, and they will ensure that families have the best support and resources available to help with the development of your child and this includes managing behaviour.

Your child's key person will be involved from the very first day that your child starts pre-school.  Your child's key worker is committed to supporting your child's wellbeing and overall development and they will communicate this with you through the following bullet points

  • Daily communication on arrival and at the end of the session (home time)
  • Opportunities for meetings at your request throughout the academic year - open door policy
  • Invitation to attend a parent consultation twice a year, including transition meetings for school leavers

You also have the opportunity to look at your child's learning journal at any time.

The EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) is an educational framework which allows your child's key worker to observe, assess and plan.  In the EYFS there are three prime areas of development and four specific areas of development.  If your child is below age band in a particular area your child's key worker will plan appropriate activities to help your child develop. If your child is still below development in an area of learning your child's key worker will arrange to discuss this with you and put a targeted plan in place.  If the targeted plan is unsuccessful in helping your child's development we would then suggest we take them to LIFT(Local Inclusion Forum Team) who will help decide if a Specialist Teacher should be assigned, who will then put into place a personalised plan.

Environment

Our early years setting is based around the child as all children learn through play.  Our setting is set up daily through the planning and the children's interest for that session.  Our setting is decorated in a natural colour and has lots of windows to allow in natural light.  We have two rooms in our setting, room 1 is for role play, arts and crafts and construction, room 2 is our quiet room which is used for puzzles,  board games and quite time in the book area.

Resources

In our setting we have a range of resources suitable for children aged between 2-5 years, most of the resources are accessible to the children, being at the childrens height, and are clearly labelled with text and pictures.  If a child requires special equipment or resources our SENCo will obtain if necessary, sometimes we are also able to claim additional funding if outside agencies are involved with your child.

Learning Strategies

All our staff have a minimum of NVQ level 3 or equivalent with both the Manager and Deputy Manager also being SENCo trained.  We also have staff who have received makaton training, as well as using visual resources in our setting.

If your child is making insufficient progress through a targeted plan the SENCo or key worker may discuss with you the need to refer to other services.  If your child begins to receive support from outside agencies the targeted plan will be changed to a personalised plan.

If required your consent will be obtained to refer to the specialist teaching through the Local Inclusion Forum Team which is held six times a year.  If the referral is accepted a specialist teacher would then visit your child in the setting to provide additional advice and guidance, you will be be consulted at every stage.

Staff in the setting attend regular training.

Your child's key worker is responsible for guiding, monitoring and supporting the physical and emotional development whilst in our care.

Your child's key worker will invite you to see your child's learning journal and hear about their progress this also provides you with the opportunity to discuss any concerns.

We are committed to an inclusive practice that enables all children to be included.  Every trip is risk assessed to take into account of any new conditions that may cause children to be at risk.

Young risers is a ground floor building and both entrances/exits have wheel chair access, this includes wider doors and a ramp to the garden area.  Whenever possible we will make any reasonable adjustments to meet the needs or parents, children or staff, their is an accessible toilet available and if needed permission can be given to drive up to the pre-school.
