I am based in Minster-on-Sea. I am experienced supporting children with additional needs and working alongside parents and therapists to support communication skills.

 

I offer childminding for pre-school children Monday to Friday, term time only from 8am to 5pm. I offer FF2 spaces for eligible 2 year olds, Universal 15 hours places for 3-4 year olds and extended 15 hours for eligible 3-4 year olds. Parents are welcome to pay via Tax-free childcare.

I offer spaces for children eligible for a 30 hours funded place, with a flexible pattern of delivery across the week to fit in with parental requirements and space availability, within my opening hours of 8am and 5pm.

How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND? 

I use 'Birth to 5 Matters' document to monitor and support children as they progress through the 7 areas of learning. I work closely with parents to identify areas a child may be struggling in or skills they are finding hard to develop. If these areas of concern are non-typical for children of that age, we can discuss referrals to outside agencies via the GP or Health Visitor.

I provide detailed reports for Health Visitors when children have their 2 year check. 

 

How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported? 

Each day you will receive a home journal outlining the highlights of the day, identifying next steps and noting how your child has eaten, napped and any toileting needs. In addition to this I will share highlights of the day via WhatsApp photos or texts.

If there are more detailed support plans in place, (such as medical / eating / behaviour) we will draft these together and you will receive a copy.

How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs? 

Your child's unique learning journey will be supported by the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and the 'Birth to 5 Matters' guidance. Each week the resources and activities offered within the setting will be tailored to the small group of children on roll.

What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties? 

A variety of teaching strategies will be used within the setting. For example, during the day there will be opportunities for guided play alongside myself, independent play with me observing, direct skills teaching (e.g. use of scissors) and nurturing time (e.g. sharing feelings or worries). Strategies will be adapted to the specific activity and to the needs of the child.

What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND? 

Children with additional needs are supported closely. Once their baseline is known and next steps are identified, we can plan how best to support and facilitate their progress. Frequent reviews of their progress and discussions with you as parents may lead to a decision by you to refer to an outside agency. This could be via the GP or Health visitor. I can support you with this and provide information to support your request.

If your child has a plan from a therapist (such as speech therapist) I can work on the targets within the setting and feed back to you and the therapist how your child is progressing.

If your child is eligible for DAF funding, we can work together on how best this funding can be used e.g. on a communication device that can transfer to their next setting / school.

How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this? 

When children start at my setting, I take time to assess their baseline, where they are now. Then, using 'Birth to 5 Matters' I identify next steps and adjust the setting resources and activities to enable these skills and experiences to occur. These next steps will be shared with you in your child's daily diary and ideas for you to support the progress at home can be given as you require. Working with a few children gives me, as a childminder, daily opportunities to focus on your child's next steps and to adapt the environment to support their progress. If your child meets these targets at home, I ask you to share this great news with me (even a photo for their diary).

How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips? 

I adapt the setting resources and sessions to meet the needs of the individual children on roll. I have a Master's Degree in Special Education and extensive experience supporting children on the Autistic Spectrum, with ADHD and with Speech / language needs. I continue to take part in training opportunities provided for childminders, through childcare.co.uk.

How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users? 

The setting is flexible to meet the needs of the children and reasonable adjustments can be made as required. However, it is worth noting that the setting is on an unmade road, with no pavement. It is a one level bungalow with steps to front and back door. There are 3 stair gates within the house, one of which is to separate the dogs sleeping in the kitchen.

I have extensive experience working as a teacher in special schools and as a SENCO. I am happy to discuss your child's additional needs and requirements. Where possible we can work together to support them within this setting.

How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school? 

I will be supporting children to be 'school ready' throughout their time with me. This will include confidence at the playgroups we visit each week, playing alongside other children, communicating their needs, developing their toileting confidence. Also they will be developing their fine motor control; with mark making leading into early writing skills, using cutlery to eat, dressing and undressing. Once a family has chosen their child's next place/school, we can work closely with the setting to share how the child is developing and their skills and interests.

How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation? 

I work closely with families to support their children's additional needs, providing information and progress for them to share with outside agencies such as Speech therapists, paediatricians etc.

I share next steps with families and strategies / resources to develop these areas. 

If a child is struggling within the setting or not progressing as hoped, then I will work with the parents to consider alternative approaches, timings or strategies.

What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints? 

I work closely with parents, sharing information daily and available to discuss any concerns that may arise. I have a Complaints Policy in place, which parents receive a copy of, outlining how any concerns can me managed.

Once a yeaar I ask parents to complete a questionnaire, giving feedback on the setting.
