Special Needs Support
How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?
Before your child starts I do a home visit with you and you can inform me of any needs or areas which they require extra support. When they start you need to complete an all about me form which you can detail the support they need and that you want me to provide. I use the Early years Foundation Stage development matters to make a baseline assessment on their learning and development within the first 6 weeks of them starting with me. When they are aged 2 I complete the Progress check, which is a statutory requirement, this is given to the health visitor to complete their check as well, any needs and developmental concerns and next steps are identified with this check and then I can write them a targeted plan in line with the findings to help them. I am completing the level 4 qualification in early years childcare which covers the SENCo (special educational needs co-ordinator) role and this and my experience in childcare and education enables me to work with other relevant professionals and settings to meet your child’s needs. My role as SENCO also means I keep up to date with the relevant training, work in partnership with yourself and others involved in your child’s care, seek advice if needed from my childminding quality advisor and make relevant referrals to specialist teaching and learning services.
How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?
I will be the key person for your child, I will be responsible for keeping their learning journal updated with photos, observations and notes on their development. We will have regular informal contact on drop off/collection, via our group WhatsApp chat, the closed facebook page and 3 times a year I will compile a termly summary and we can meet to discuss this summary and their development and next steps. I operate an open door policy and can schedule a meeting at any point if you have any concerns. Any targeted plans, next steps and extra support put in place for your child will be with your consultation so we can all work together to hep your child.
How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?
I follow the Early Years Foundation Stage to plan for your child’s learning. This is recorded in their personal learning journal via observations, assessment and planning in the 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas. To adapt the framework to meet a child’s individual needs in Personal Social and Emotional development I have links to gain advice and support from health professionals, local specialist provisions because I work on a smaller ratio than a nursery I can use targeted activities to help promote a child’s well being. To support with communication and language I can work with the speech and language team, I am looking into completing the I CAN early talk programme in the near future, I can work on specific smaller activities as recommended in Every Child a Talker programme. I give support and advice and ideas for parents to do at home with their child to assist their communication. My setting can be tailored to the individual language needs of each child due to the smaller ratio. To aid your child’s Physical development alongside the EYFS requirements my setting is more flexible and adaptable to an individuals needs, my environment can be adapted to meet the sensory as well as physical needs, I have access to outdoor areas, can cater for any dietary requirements and can assist with gaining support from therapist’s such as occupational therapy.
What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?
As. A childminder I am in a good position to provide activities for your child to ensure they gain the best learning from everyday home activities such as shopping, helping around the house, self care and also from planned activities to meet their individual needs. As SENCo for my setting, I will work with parents and relevant agencies to ensure I have any necessary equipment needed, I can claim funding if applicable to purchase specialist equipment and resources or training to support my care off your child. I am currently completing the Level 4 qualification in early years and childcare which covers the SENCo and PANCo roles in greater detail.
How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?
My relationship with all the parents is very positive and strong. We work together to help the child develop and learn, sharing our knowledge between us. I have been involved in appointments for therapists, done training with parents and medical staff to meet a child needs and when I was due my last first aid training some of the parents came and completed the course as well. The progress check at age 2 and the Early Years Foundation Stage profile are completed at the relevant times, age 2 and at the end of reception year, although as the child is at school at this time the school usually complete this and I complete the 2 year progress check to identify any areas that they are not developing in and that they need additional support with.
How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?
To ensure all children are included in all activities I make constant assessments of the child, risk assessments and good planning. I am committed to be fully inclusive of all children of all ages and abilities and that any activities or trips are planned, adapted and suitable for your child’s needs.
How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?
Although I work in my home, all the rooms the children use are accessible. i have lots of parking on my drive so it is safe to get in and out of cars, there is a small step into the house and a step out to the garden but these are not high and can be easily accessed by a buggy or wheelchair. I have a downstairs toilet so children do not need to access the upstairs. The garden is flat and level with a sunken trampoline so all children can use it.
How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?
To support transitions to new settings or to start school I do visits to the school, invite the staff to visit us, they are sent a transition letter and a copy of their latest termly summary and any relevant health and education information the school or setting might need. I use role play and dress up activities, show photos of the new setting if unable to visit there and talk with your child about the transition.
How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?
I hold regular meetings and have lots of informal contact with parents, I send out surveys and questionnaires to the parents about my setting and their involvement and how it can be improved, my policies and procedures are reviewed yearly and I discuss and assess my practice with another childminder to see how improvements can be made.
Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?
if you would like to place your child with me I would make a home visit to you first where we could meet and get to know each other and your child and their needs. I give a parent information pack with my policies, photos of some of the things we do, an introduction to myself and my background and the terms and conditions of fees, funding and payments. Settling in visits can be arranged, as many as are needed to suit your child and yourself. The first visit is usually to see my setting and my portfolio with my qualifications and Ofsted certificates/insurance documents and decide if you would like a place here, the next one would be to complete the contracts, fill out forms, apply for funding's such as free for 2’s, 3 &4 year old funded hours and extended funding and any funding such as DAF and SENIF. Then I suggest a couple of short visits just for the child and then a longer one before they start but these settling sessions are not set in stone and are arranged to suit each child.
What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
I have an open door policy, parents are encouraged to comment and feedback on my practice. I am open to new suggestions and ideas as well as critiques of my provision. My policies and complaint procedures are available in the new parent pack as well as in my portfolio file. Feedback from a previous parent who’s child with SEN used to attend “Jenny, we couldn’t have done these past few years without you. Your kindness and love has shone through with your care you have shown G. You have always accommodated for her in your setting and have put her needs first. You have done it worth positivity, patience and love. You have encouraged and supported G in developing skills for life. You have become so much part of our family and we are so thankful for that.”
