Special Needs Support
How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?
We have a team of very experienced, qualified staff who are able to identify and support children who may need extra help in a particular area of development.
How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?
We regularly observe all the children in the setting and if we feel your child needs extra support in a particular area we will arrange a meeting to discuss this with you. In some cases further support is requested from the specialist teaching team (with parental consent). Parents are invited to attend meetings to discuss their child's progress every 6-8 weeks.
How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?
At Rain or Shine the staff are very experienced and are able to adapt the activities we offer to meet the needs of all the children taking part. The forest school ethos is to follow the child's individual interests and we support each child to make progress from where they are when they join us.
What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?
At universal level (for all children) we have a visual timetable for the daily routine. Most staff have recently trained in Makaton so we use signs as well as verbal communication when talking to children. Some children benefit from other visual support too.
If required a targeted or personalised plan will be put in place after discussion with the parents. A regular review meeting will take place every 6-8 weeks.
At the end of each term a report is produced which shows all the observations and photos of the child, what they have been doing and how they have progressed.
At the end of each day parents are sent photos of their child (which are usually annotated) and at the end of each week a summary is sent to all parents with details of what the children have been up to, how their play has evolved over the week and how that has informed our planning for the week ahead.
We use an online childcare software package called Babysdays which also enables parents to communicate with us by uploading photos, recording observations and comment on what we upload.
What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?
If your child has additional needs or SEND the please contact the provider to explain what extra support they will need. Because we are a fully outdoor setting the most important thing is that your child is safe whilst they are in our care - that means that they understand they must stay within the forest school boundary.
In some cases we may be able to apply for extra funding in order to give your child 1-1 support. Our ratios are favourable with 1 adult to 5 children anyway but we are unable to provide 1-1 support without additional funding.
How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?
We do not have a building as we are a fully outdoor forest school. It would therefore be difficult for a child with mobility difficulties or a wheelchair user to access our provision due to uneven ground and mud.
How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?
We pride ourselves on working with other settings and schools to ensure that transitions go as smoothly as possible. We are in contact with a lot of the local schools and many of the reception teachers visit the children progressing to school during the summer term to help the transition go as well as it can.
How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?
All parents are regularly asked to complete a satisfaction survey about their own and their child's experience at Rain or Shine. Parents of children with SEN also have 6-8 week meetings in which their views are taken into consideration.
Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?
Please contact Nadia Romano - Owner
What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
All parents are regularly asked to complete a satisfaction survey about their own and their child's experience at Rain or Shine. Compliments and complaints can be uploaded onto Babysdays and we have a comprehensive Complaints Policy should parents feel the need to complain - however we would always recommend that you speak to the manager or owner first.
