Bluebells Nursery


We are a vibrant, friendly, fully inclusive school maintained  nursery who  achieved an ‘Outstanding’ grade from our most recent OFSTED.

We offer an imaginative, stimulating multi-sensory, and language rich environment, with carefully planned provision to meet the children’s individual needs using the EYFS framework.

Our learning is ‘Child led’, following interests and needs.  We record each child's learning journey on a digital system called Tapestry which enables parents to see observations of their child from their  iphone or computer at home.

We are a sessional setting and have the capacity to take up to 26 children per session. We take children a term after their third birthday and offer 15 hours of nursery per week. In addition to this we also offer 30 hours for working parents of 3 and 4-year olds.

We are a school based, purpose built Nursery. We plan carefully to meet children's needs and follow their interests in all areas of the EYFS Curriculum. Our school has a Children's Centre on sight who work closely with us.

How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND? 

As part of our admission’s process your child is invited to ‘stay and play’. During this time, we ask you to complete a form which gives us the chance to get to know your child and provides the opportunity for you express any concerns you may have or if they are already receiving additional support from outside agencies. We ask about your child’s interests at home so that this can inform our planning. When your child begins attending our Nursery, we assess their starting points inline with a document called Development Matters.

If your child requires additional support this will be discussed with you and the next steps identified to help them to move forward. This may involve your child’s key worker targeting a specific area of development such as a social skill and providing opportunities for your child to gain further experience in this area. This would be written and shared with you through a targeted plan.

Our Senco ensures that families have the best support and resources to help with the development of your child including behaviour management

How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported? 

At Bluebells Nursery the staff work very hard to create a caring nurturing environment. A Key person is involved right from the start so that strong positive relationships are built. Partnership with parents is highly valued as it is essential, we work closely together to give your child the best opportunities.

There are lots of ways you can feel involved in how your child is supported. We have Tapestry a digital system which enables you to see observations of your child from your iphone or computer at home, or if you do not have access to this you can make an appointment to come into school to view them and talk to your child’s key worker regarding their progress. Daily informal contact can also take place at drop off and pick up times, as well as opportunities for meetings at your request throughout the year.

There is also an invitation to a meeting 3 times a year to discuss your child’s progress and any additional support they might need and collaboration with you on any targeted planning.

How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs? 

Provision for your child is carefully planned to meet their individual needs using the EYFS framework. We observe, assess and plan for your child in the three prime areas (Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development) and four specific areas of learning (Mathematics, Literacy, Understanding of the World , Expressive Art and Design).

Bluebells Nursery is a language rich environment where the children are given a wealth of opportunities to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves and to speak and listen in a range of situations. We proactively use picture prompts and Makaton signing to support communication and language. We work inline with speech and language therapy advice and provide additional intervention groups to support children in this area.

Bluebells Nursery helps children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others and to form positive relationships. In small groups children learn to understand appropriate behaviour and to have confidence in their own abilities. Support is given throughout each day to develop social skills and help children to learn to manage their feelings. We work closely with advisors and local specialist provision to support this.

Bluebells nursery provides the opportunity for children to develop their co-ordination, control and movement using fine and gross motor skills. We offer an imaginative, stimulating multi-sensory environment filled with opportunities for physical development both inside and out that the children can access freely during Child Initiated time. Children are also taught to understand the importance of physical activity and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties? 

 We carefully plan our environment so that children can access learning in prime and specific areas through their play with increasing confidence and independence. We offer a bright well resourced, stimulating and interactive environment which is adapted according to children’s specific interests and needs.

We provide a range of resources appropriate to support children’s development at all levels. Our SENCo works closely with key persons to make sure specialist equipment is obtained where necessary. Where children are receiving support from outside agencies it is sometimes possible to claim for extra funding to buy additional resources.

We use ‘The best Practice Guidance’ document to support our teaching which is divided into universal, targeted and personalized levels to enable us to support children in the four broad areas of need identified in the SEND code of Practice (Communication and Interaction, Cognition and Learning, Social, Emotional and Mental health, Physical and Sensory difficulties). We use a range of strategies to support our teaching and learning including visual resources and Makaton signing.

What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND? 

 If your child is making insufficient progress through a targeted plan, The SENCo or key person may discuss with you the need to refer to other services such as Speech and language therapy. If your child begins to receive support fom outside agencies, the targeted plan would be changed to a personalized plan.

If required, your consent would be obtained to refer to the Specialist Teaching and Learning Service through the local Inclusion Team Forum(LIFT)meeting which is held six times a year. If the referral is accepted, a specialist teacher would then visit your child to provide additional advice and guidance and may make further referrals to other services, such as health and would support your child’s transition into school. At all stages you would be consulted.

How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this? 

The staff at Bluebells Nursery are all highly trained to guide, monitor and support the physical and emotional development of all the children in our care. Your child will be allocated a Key Person as they begin, who will work closely with them and focus on their learning journey during their time here.

Your child’s development is monitored through careful observation of their achievements in the prime and specific areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips? 

Bluebells Nursery is highly committed to inclusive practice. Planning is carefully considered taking into account children’s interests and is adapted by staff to meet the needs of all the children. Children who struggle to listen to stories for example are placed in a very small group where lots of repetition, props and pictures are used to support their understanding and attention.

We take children on small trips to places such as the library and the church. Whenever we have new children we revise our health and safety risk assessment to take account of any new conditions which may cause the children to be at risk. For any outing undertaken a trained first aider is always present with a first aid bag and children’s emergency details. We welcome parents to accompany us on any outing we make.

How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users? 

Bluebell’s Nursery is built on one level and has wheelchair access. The outdoor area is also accessible through large double doors.

Whenever possible we will make reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of children, parents or staff. We have a large accessible toilet and an area with changing facilities. Please let us know if you have any difficulties with accessibility.

How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school? 

A progress report incorporating information about the characteristics of effective learning will be passed on to a new setting or school.

Children starting Lydd Primary School will have the opportunity to meet their new Teachers and Teaching Assistants in stay and play sessions. Parents will have the opportunity to meet with current and new staff to discuss transitions.

How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation? 

Staff at Bluebells Nursery have an excellent parent partnership. We have an open- door policy and discuss any concerns parents or staff may have. The SENCo regularly attends LIFT meetings and SENCo forum meetings to ensure children are given the best possible support. Where possible staff attend courses to enable them to help children with specific needs and to feed back good practice to other team members within the setting.

Official parent meetings are held 3 times a year but in addition to this, parents can make an appointment to discuss their child’s progress with staff at any time during the academic year. The use of the Tapestry means that parents can access photographs and observations from their child’s learning journey, anytime they wish.

Policies and procedures are regularly reviewed and up-dated and an annual questionnaire is sent out to help us evaluate what we are doing well and what we can do to make our setting even more effective.

Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting? 

If you wish your child to attend Bluebell’s Nursery you need to telephone Lydd Primary School who will put you through to Bluebells Nursery. We will invite you and your child to attend a ‘Stay and Play’ session. During this time, we ask you to complete a form which gives us the chance to get to know your child and provides the opportunity for you express any concerns you may have or to tell us if they are already receiving additional support from outside agencies. Additional visits to the setting can be made if they are required.

What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints? 

Our SEND policy provides the context for supporting children through the graduated approach. Copies of all our policies and details about the complaints procedure can be seen on the Village Academy web-site.

Bluebells nursery have excellent partnerships with parents and have an open door’ policy where parents can openly discuss any concerns they might have and welcome any constructive feedback given.

" As a concerned parent of a child who was very shy,not wanting to interact with other children and limited communication with any-one unfamilliar to him I approached the Nursery with my concerns. I spoke to them about the fact he would need a very gentle build up to help him become more confident  and discussed strategies to help him cope with his anxiety e.g. by having an area to go to if he was feeling overwhelmed.
