Description

We believe every child should have the opportunity to be themselves and we will support every child to develop and learn regardless of SEN or disabilities. The children at Elham Pre-School have a keyworker who helps them to settle in and is available for the parents to discuss any concerns or achievements. The keyworker observes their group of children and updates their progress and plans their next steps in the Early Years Foundation Stage. Our SENCO is available to support our keyworkers to ensure your child is able to develop through the EYFS.

Special Needs Support

We gather initial information from the parents via our registration and All About Me forms as well as discussing the children during the initial settling session.

Depending on the age at joining Pre-School we will complete the Two Year Check with parents and discuss any needs or concerns.

Keyworkers carry out regular observations of the children which identifies any developmental concerns.

If the parent has highlighted any concerns they have we will use this as a basis to observe and our SENCO will support the keyworker to plan for the child.

We have regular progress meetings with the parents and they are able to talk to us before and after the session with any concerns they have.

All the children have learning journals with photos and notes of activities the children have been doing.

If an area of developmental need has been observed then the Keyworker with support from the SENCO and input from the parents will write a targeted plan. If we need to consult with outside agencies then parental permission will be sort and you will be kept informed of what is happening during the process.

After identifying areas of need we will adjust activities so they are at a suitable stage for the child to progress with their learning.

We will work with the child in either a small group or 1:1 to achieve their targets.

When planning the activities we will ensure they capture the childs imagination using things they are interested in.

Staff attend training to ensure they are able to help children extend their involvement with activities and progress with their learning.

We try to focus on what the child is learning as well as how the child is learning so we can support them in the way they like to learn.

We like input from the parents so we ensure we are planning with the child’s interests as a basis for learning.

We have a range of visual support aids such as timetable and pictures for now and next boards. We also have quiet/calm areas that the children can access when needed.

Observations of the child are made so learning and development can be recorded and tracked to identify areas of need. The keyworker and SENCO will then complete a targeted plan which will be discussed with parents and their input can be added. We use SMART targets (specific, measurable, accessible, realistic and timebound).

Staff undertake training to ensure that they can support all children to achieve their best progress.

We encourage all parents to come along for a stay and play session and then a graduated starting time so the length of the session can gradually increase. The stay and play gives the keyworker the opportunity to discuss how we will be supporting your child in the setting and how we will be setting targets for progress.

The SENCO liaises with outside agencies such as Portage, Specialist Teacher and Learning Services, Speech and Language therapists to ensure your child receives the support they need.

We also apply for funding to ensure your child can have the more individual support and additional equipment if needed.

If your child has medical issues then we will ensure staff are trained to deal with those needs.

A child’s keyworker will monitor their progress using the “my unique progress” document three times a year and will meet with parents to discuss how their child is doing.

Children with targeted or personalised plans will have them reviewed more regularly, every 6 to 8 weeks parents are involved in the review and agreeing the next steps to achieve the best outcome for the child.

We use an overall monitoring system which the Manager can see if there are any areas of need for children.

Parents can talk to staff on an informal basis at the beginning and end of the sessions or make an appointment to discuss any concerns they have.

We risk assess activities and outings to ensure all the children can take part. This may mean adjusting how it is accessed or set up, as well as additional adult support to do it.

Staff attend training to ensure they are informed on how to help the children effectively.

The building has a car park with disabled parking next to the main door. There is also a wide concrete path if you are walking to the venue.

There are wide doors to access the building and everything is on one level.

Access to the garden which has a large paved patio is through double doors and there are sloped paths to the gates for exiting without returning to the building.

There is a disabled toilet available.

We have close links to our local primary school and others in the surrounding areas. We are happy to visit the school for meetings to support your child’s transition.

We encourage teachers or a member of the new setting to come in and meet with your child in our pre-school.

We will complete a “my unique transition” document which can go to the new setting. Along with any resources that will help with them settling in such as their “now and next” pictures.

We have our policies and procedures which are updated regularly and any new procedures shared at staff meetings.

Our SENCO attends LIFT and forum meetings as well as training sessions.

We also have access to other outside agencies for help and support.

Our staff are able to feed back any areas of concern at meetings to ensure our practice is the best it can be.

We send out questionnaires to parents for their feedback and they can put comments in the box in the entrance.

Regular meetings with parents give them the opportunity to raise any concerns.

There are a few ways you can contact us via our website enquiry facility, via our facebook page by sending us a message or telephoning us. We’ll invite you to visit so you can have a look round and register for a place.

Parents and carers are welcome to speak to staff either before or after the session to offer any suggestions, compliments or minor issues. They can also book an appointment if they wish to speak privately.

We will follow our complaints procedure for any issues raised.

Parents can also write and post items into our comments box in the entrance.
