Bronte School Kindergarten

Our Kindergarten class is for the pre-school year (ages 3 and 4). Most children join Bronte School in this year. The class provides a happy, secure foundation for school life and the transition to the Reception year.

Kindergarten has a very gentle feel, akin to a Nursery, with a slightly more school-type atmosphere and routine.  Children attending Kindergarten start with a minimum of three full days, which will increase to four days or full time, by the Spring Term.

Building upon the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, the Kindergarten curriculum employs a variety of approaches: staff-led guidance and teaching is mixed with wide opportunities for play, in order that day-by day the children can contentedly grow, enjoy and learn for themselves.

There are, too, group activities designed to promote healthy and strong growth and the building of skills. Dough Gym, Funky Fingers and Write Dance, for example, mix fun and a focused development of the muscle control skills needed when progressing to writing.

Creativity and breadth of experience is enhanced by music, choir, art and PE and Forest School sessions, and by full involvement in school events such as French Day, special assemblies, service visits and charity days.

Special Needs Support

Our admissions process is designed to help children and parents settle at Bronte School.  This is essential if we are to correctly identify any potential SEND needs.  An admissions pack, information booklet, and home visit by our Kindergarten ensure we know all we possibly can about each child before they start attending.  Once children start, Stay ‘n’ Play sessions begin to build strong relationships with children (and parents), which are the foundation for effective progress and identification of any additional need.  A child’s own interests are used to engage and stimulate learning. Once a child has settled, informal assessment is on-going with access to our Learning Support department if we believe a child may need additional support.  Observations may take place, and discussions will follow with parents if necessary.

How will I be informed/consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

There are lots of ways that parents are involved in all that happens, including any additional support that may be offered:

  • Daily informal contact at drop-off and pick-up
  • Daily access to your child’s online learning journal, which consists of written observations, photos and short videos.
  • Opportunities for meetings at your request throughout the year.
  • Collaboration with you on any extra planning we put in place.
  • Regular parent meetings where progress is discussed more formally.

The EYFS is an educational framework which allows key persons to plan individually for your 'unique child'. We observe, assess and plan for your child in 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas. These are:-

Prime areas:

  • Communication & Language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

Specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Our teaching starts with planning for the environment to provide conditions that will enable children to listen and attend and have full involvement in their learning. Our Kindergarten and Reception classrooms benefit from natural light and fresh air. We have soft furnishings and rugs to minimise noise and encourage a sense of well-being. We also have moveable furniture to facilitate small group activities and quiet areas.

Effective teaching and learning requires a wide range of resources appropriate to support children's development at all levels. Our Learning Support department and Head of Early Years work make sure specialist equipment is obtained if necessary.

All our EY staff are trained in early years practice and some more experienced staff have received training in supporting children with additional needs, English as an additional language or those who may need additional support in speech & language. We use the Best Practice Guidance to support our teaching. This document which was written by the Specialist Teaching and Learning Service sets out a range of teaching strategies which can be used to support children e.g the use of visual resources and Makaton signing. The book is divided into universal, targeted and personalised levels to enable us to support children in the 4 broad areas of need. The areas of need are identified in the SEND Code of Practice and comprise:

  • Communication and interaction
  • Cognition and learning
  • Social emotional and mental health
  • Physical/sensory difficulties

Please arrange a visit during which we will be able to advise prospective parents on how we ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips.
