Special Needs Support
How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?
We invite you to come and look around our nursery, and encourage you to bring your child with you, this gives us the opportunity to meet your child and to discuss their needs.
We will ask you to complete our registration form and ask you to detail any additional needs that your child might have.
We aim to build close relationships with parents from the start of your journey at Busy Bees. We have a keycarer system at the nursery and this gives the parent, child and staff member to build positive relationships.
If your child has been supported by other Professionals including Health Professionals, could you please share any reports with us.
Staff are trained in how to identify children with additional or special educational needs.
The SENCo attends training and meetings. We liaise closely with other Professionals such as Health Professionals and Specialist Teaching Service.
How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?
Here at the nursery we operate an open-door policy by which parents are welcome to come along and talk to their child’s key carer/senco or the nursery manager, where you can discuss any concerns that you may have, and we will regularly discuss your child's progress with you.
The SENCO will assist your child’s keycarer, and will work closely with them, moving them forward by providing achievable targets at every stage. All staff will be aware of the support needed at any time.
How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?
Every child’s individual learning characteristics are taken into account and used to promote their development, whatever their ability and understanding. Individual Education Plans are used if your child has and additional needs.
The EYFS is an education framework which allows the key carer to plan for your ‘unique child’. Ensuring that we observe, assess and plan for your child, will help us meet their individual needs.
What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?
All our staff are trained in Early Years, we plan for the individual child, our plans and knowledge of a child helps us to support individual children, this could be through a targeted or personalised intervention. Plans are monitored regularly to check on progress made, the targets are small, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound.
We make changes to our environment to support individual children and you will be able to discuss any concerns with either the manager or SENCO at any time, or make an appointment at a time which is convenient to you.
What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?
Our SENCO evaluates the learning and development of the children and helps the Key carer provide targeted or individual plans for the children that need them.
When possible, we access additional funding allowing us to offer augmented care or purchase specialised equipment for a particular child. We access regular training opportunities to ensure we are up to date with current SEN issues and advice. Our staff are skilled at getting to know the children and their interests and at adjusting activities to enable children to progress at their own rates. We have good links with the local Children’s Centre and are able to pass on referrals to them should a parent / carer wish us to do so.
How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?
Each child has a Key carer who will observe them and plan for their individual children. The setting SENCO works closely with all the team members and will look for areas of development that may need additional planning for. All targeted and personalised plans are reviewed regularly to monitor achievement and set new targets.
How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?
Our staff are skilled at offering differentiated planning for individual children’s needs. All children are fully included in all aspects of the setting, this includes trips out. Additional staff are put in place for such events and no child will ever be excluded.
How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?
We have a ramp to be able to enter the building. Our under 2's is downstairs meaning that our over 2's is upstairs with no lift provided.
How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?
We pride ourselves on our school transitions. We have close links with our local schools and arrange visits for the children before they leave us. We meet with the teachers of the schools and discuss each child, their progress, and any particular need they may have.
We encourage the school to speak with you as parents / carers to alleviate any anxiety you may have about your child’s transition. We send over to the schools information regarding progress, likes and interests, particular dislikes etc. to enable the school staff to have some knowledge regarding your child.
We provide opportunities for the children to practice putting on their shoes and coats or to try on school uniform.
How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?
The SENCO attends regular SENCO forum meetings in order to remain up to date with current legislation and issues. We are able to access LIFT meetings to gain support and request specialist guidance. We hold regular staff meetings in order that our staff are kept fully informed of up to date information. Parents are invited in to review their child’s targeted or personalise plans, and their views are always taken into account.
Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?
Please contact the nursery and we will arrange a visit for you and your child to visit the nursery. The manager will show you around and you will be able to meet with our SENCO to discuss your child’s additional needs if you wish to do so. We offer settling in sessions before the start date too.
What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
We have an open door policy and are available to speak to parents when needed. We use parent questionnaires as an anonymous way for parents to tell us what they think of the nursery and what we offer the children. We take on board suggestions and comments regarding improvements or ideas. We have a complaints procedure that parents are able to access either in the setting or via our website.
