Notes

We provide a stimulating atmosphere where learning is a natural and welcome part of everyday life. Our teaching is centred around the Early Years Foundation Stage Development Matters which ensures equality of opportunity for all children and their families. Every child is seen as unique and we value their thoughts and ideas and support them in initiating their own play.

We have a large outside area with lots of opportunities for gross motor skills as well as investigating the natural environment.

Notes

Our aim is for all children to have high quality experiences according to their individual needs, throughout the Early Years Foundation Stage.

From the age of 2, we encourage children to develop confidence, engage in self-discovery and build positive peer relationships.  Within our curriculum skills are taught to develop children as rounded individuals. Our dedicated staff work with the children to strengthen their social, emotional and spiritual values. A range of play experiences are designed to meet each child’s individual development needs.  We aim to provide your child with a firm foundation on which to build, when taking their next steps into primary education.  We are a fully inclusive early years setting, catering for children with additional needs where necessary.  Our staff are highly trained to support children with a range of needs and work closely with specialist professionals.  We are wheelchair accessible.

Description

As a Kindergarten, we welcome all children to our setting and aim to support any child who may have Special Educational Needs or a Disability. We will identify any specific needs and refer to relevant Specialist Teachers as well as outside agencies for advice and support.

Special Needs Support

Our setting uses Best Guidance Practice to support all children through observations, alongside information given to us at admission and any concerns a parent may have raised prior to admission.

We follow the new development matters which helps us to assess the child's starting points and this highlights any areas of concerns. We can then breakdown their targets into smaller steps using the milestones, this will highlight which areas we need to focus on.

The class teacher and SENCo will oversee the planning and personalised targeted plans for the individual child. These will be communicated to parents through  meetings and reviewed regularly 6-8 weeks to monitor progress. The child's key worker will be involved from the outset together with the SENCo and the class teacher.

Throughout the year, there will  be parent consultation meetings together with regular updates via our Tapestry online learning journal.

We use the new Development Matters Framework in conjunction with the Milestones Assessment tool which helps support us to differentiate activities and the learning to support all children's abilities.

We will adapt activities to support identified children and we will use a variety of resources to be inclusive. Additional funding where eligible is applied for and specialist equipment and resources are purchased using the funding to support better outcomes.

If a child has an area of specific need and a personalised/targeted plan has been implemented, this will be discussed with parents to support continuity of strategies within the setting as well as at home.

Parents will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns with the key worker or class teacher throughout the day when available.

The SENCo will review personalised plans with the teacher and key worker and follow up with parents. Parents will be able to view their child's learning through the Tapestry portal.

All our staff are trained in Early Years with the relevant qualifications and are able to use the Best Practice Guidance on all levels to identify and support the children's learning progress.

Any child that has been identified and is not making sufficient progress through a personalised plan, will be referred to Specialist Teacher and Learning Services after gaining parental consent following a discussion.

Children with SEND may receive augmentative support, together with support from the STLS team who come in to assess and advise the setting and give us guidance on setting the targets.

Certain members of staff are trained and hold the qualification of Administration of Medicines in Schools.  A Healthcare Plan is written in partnership with the parents instructions and followed accordingly.

The key worker and teacher are responsible for supporting both the child's well being as well as their physical development, which is especially important for those children with any form of educational needs.

We complete the statutory two year old check which is shared with the parents at a meeting.  This can also highlight any areas of concern and gives parents another opportunity to verbalise their concerns or worries. If this check highlights any significant delays in development, the setting can arrange an integrated two year old check with the Health Visitor.

We strive to be fully inclusive and our practice enables all children to access the curriculum and any planned activities or trips. Risk assessments are implemented and reviewed regularly to ensure Health and Safety is adhered to.

Trips leaving the setting are discussed with parents weeks prior to the activity commencing to ensure that additional support is in place.

Our setting is all on one level and we have a disabled toilet which is accessible for anybody with mobility difficulties, including wheelchair users.

We have a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan in place for any child with disabilities.

We have a very robust transition into Folkestone Primary with extra visits to the reception classrooms.  The children visit for play sessions during plan and learn and the Early Years Lead visits the nursery on a regular basis.

Children who are transitioning to other primary schools in the area are visited by their new reception class teacher.  A detailed handover is given to the new primary class teacher/FLO/SENCo by the key worker and nursery teacher.

Throughout the year we have dedicated pupil progress meetings to discuss all children who may have been highlighted with additional needs or are on a personalised plan. This gives all key workers the opportunity to share and discuss next steps, intervention groups and supportive activities.

Our SENCo attends Lift meetings on a regular basis as well as SENCo forums.

We regularly review our policies and procedures and our staff have regular CPD training.

The first point of contact would be Mrs Hughes or Mrs Groombridge via the Kindergarten email or telephone to check availability.

There is a Google Register of Interest on the website for completion or alternatively email The Kindergarten or phone to discuss availablility and your requirements.

We can also arrange a convenient time to show prospective parents/children a tour around the Kindergarten.

We have termly open afternoons where we welcome the parents to join us in the activities connected to the termly topic. During these sessions, parents are encouraged to complete the Parent Voice feedback slips.

We also have a very open door policy for parents to voice any compliments, concerns or complaints they may feel that needs addressing.

Parent consultations are held in line with the primary school which gives the parents an opportunity to complete a feedback form and the information is collated.

Parents can also communicate via the Tapestry portal which is viewed by the class teacher, SENCo and key workers.
