Special Needs Support
How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?
Before any child starts at Little Angels Playgroup the child’s parent/carer completes a registration form. On the form there is an area for parents to write any concerns they may have or if additional outside agencies are already being used for their child. There is also a section that asks if the child has had a two-year check and what the outcome of that check was.
The children have an initial assessment written by their key worker which will indicate what their starting points are.
If your child is two years old when they start, they will also have a two-year progress check written up within 6 weeks of their start date. If we identify any concerns, we will request for another two-year check to be completed in playgroup with a health visitor and parent present. You will always be asked before any referral or request for your permission.
We have monthly staff meetings where we discuss our key children and if there are any children we feel need some extra support while they are in playgroup.
How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?
The SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator) will contact you via the phone to discuss the ways in which your child is being supported in playgroup. There is also time at the door for you to speak to a staff member if you need to. We will always ask your permission before any referrals are made. You can also call the SENCO or arrange a time to meet and discuss face to face any concerns you may have. We hold a yearly parent/carer meeting for you to look through your child’s learning journey and talk to your child’s key person about your child.
How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?
We understand that all children have different needs and abilities when it comes to their development. All children have learning journeys that we complete for them. This allows us to monitor what development stage they are currently at and this supports us to be able to plan for the children’s next steps according to their developmental stage, needs and abilities.
What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?
As a setting we use Makaton signs with all of the children including those with SEN and additional needs. We are very caring and nurturing and we pride ourselves on having a great relationship with the children and their families. We adapt activities for the children’s needs and abilities so that all children are included.
We use visual aids for children with SEN and EAL.
All staff are supported by the SENCO and any training that is needed to support children with SEN is provided.
What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?
If your child was to need any extra support with their development we would always work together with parents/carers to ensure we are providing the best support for your child. Some children may only need some extra support in playgroup, in which case we may start using targeted plans which allows us to plan strategies and activities to help support your child. Other children may need additional support from outside agencies, this could include speech and language or learning development. We would always contact you first to get your consent before making any referrals, target or personalised plans.
If required and with your consent, we may take your child to a Local Inclusion Forum Team (LIFT) meeting. This will be to discuss the needs of your child, the support we have already put into place and what further support we may need in playgroup or you may need at home to help with supporting your child’s development.
How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?
We monitor your child’s progress by completing end of term progress trackers. We also complete learning journeys for the children, we link this to the EYFS which also helps us monitor their current development stage. You are able to view your child’s learning journey at any time. We are also available to talk via the phone or at the door when you are dropping off/picking up your child.
How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?
We adapt any activities that we need to, to meet all children’s needs and abilities. We will always give children the same opportunities but adapt anything we need to in order for all children to take part. If we were to take the children on a trip out of setting, we would complete a risk assessment to ensure the safety of all children. Any outings would be adapted so that all children are given the same opportunities. We would ensure we have extra staff members on any outings
How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?
We are an upstairs setting of a church. There is wheel chair access to the downstairs of the building and a disabled toilet. Children who require help up the stairs are either supported with a member of staff to walk up the stairs or is carried by a member of staff. Once in the play room everything is on the same level including toilets and the playroom is a big open space with plenty of room to move around.
How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?
We will work with your child’s new school and discuss any relevant information with their school SENCO. We forward any documentation we have regarding your child to their new school.
We hold school transition meetings in setting so that your child’s new class teacher can come in and visit your child while at playgroup. This is another opportunity to discuss your child’s needs and abilities with their new school. It is also a way for your child to meet their new teacher in a familiar surrounding with the support from their key person.
In the last half term of the year we turn our role play area into a school role play area. This is so that there is the opportunity for children to try on school uniform, role play schools with their friends and have plenty of opportunity to talk about their new school with their friends and staff members.
How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?
During our monthly staff meetings we have the opportunity to discuss our SEN provision and if there are any ways in which we could adapt what we are currently doing if we need to. We have a SEN policy that is reviewed and updated yearly.
Our staff have a great relationship with parents and your child’s key person or SENCO is always available if you needed to talk to them.
We have parent feedback forms where parents are able to write their thoughts.
Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?
If you would like to access a place at Little Angels Playgroup you can contact us via our telephone or email
What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
We have a compliments and complaints folder that is accessible to parents. Parents can also contact us via phone or email to discuss anything they may want to talk about including complaints.
