Special Needs Support
How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?
When you come in for an initial visit before your child starts with us, you can discuss any concerns you may have about your child. If your child has a diagnosis or condition or requires additional support for an ongoing condition, you can discuss this with the manager at this point. We will discuss with you what your childs needs are and any support that they are already receiving. If we need some additional advice or training to understand your childs needs or condition further, we will consult you and contact our early years inclusion advisor for advice and support. If you confirm that you would like your child to start with us, you will receive your registration forms. These will help us to build a picture of your child and their needs and any additional support they may need. You and your child will be invited in for another visit where you will be introduced to your childs key person. They will spend some time with you and you can discuss any concerns you may have with them. She will spend some time getting to know your child during this time. They will be offered another stay and play session before they start where, as long as you are happy to leave them, they will spend sometime with their key person.
Once your child starts with us, the key person will observe and plan activities to support your child in all areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage. They will complete a 2 years progress check on your child within the first term of your child starting, if your child is 2 years old. They will complete a progress check on your child if they are 3 or 4 within the first term. If your child appears to not be reaching their milestones in certain areas, your childs keyperson will refer to the Best Practice Guidance for more advice. If she feels more support is required, she will speak to the SENCo about her concerns and whether it will be necessary to get some more specialist support from specialist teaching
How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?
Your childs key person will discuss with you any concerns she may have. You can come in to speak to her at anytime if you have concerns about your child or if you would like to know how we are supporting your child. We may decide to put your child on a Targeted Plan which supports your child in a targeted way offering strategies and ways that we can help and support your child. These are reviewed every term and you will be invited in to discuss your childs progress with the key person and SENCo and to add your own views and ideas to the Targeted Plan. If we feel that your child needs more support to meet their individual needs, we may put them onto a Personalised Plan. These are reviewed every term and you will be invited in to discuss your childs progress and to add any additional thoughts and information about how they are at home. If the key person and SENCo feel they may need some additional advice and support to help your child, with your agreement, they may feel it is necessary to contact specialist teaching and take your childs case to LIFT (Local Inclusion Forum Team) for more advice
How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?
We are an inclusive pre-school and all children are welcome to come to us. All of our activities can be adapted to ensure all children are included, regardless of their age and stage of development and their ability. Your childs key person will plan activities to support your childs needs and encourage their development, according to their needs. All staff are aware of every childs needs and know and understand how to support a child that needs some additional support, in the absence of your childs key person.
What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?
You can come into pre-school to discuss your childs progress at anytime. We complete progress tracking forms on the children every other term. If your child is on a Targeted Plan or Personalised Plan, you will be invited in every term to discuss how the plan has gone that term and whether there are any changes that need to be made to support your childs needs further. We have information available that we can show you that explains what to expect with childrens development and also the Milestones Assessment toolkit which we use to monitor your childs progress. When we discuss with you how we are encouraging your child at pre-school we will offer advice and support of activities and things that you could try at home. We can get specialist teaching involved if necessary and when they come in, they can discuss with you how to support your child further. If you are struggling to deal with your childs behaviour at home, we can refer you to Early Help who will come out to your home and offer advice and support to you.
How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?
You will be involved in every step of your childs development and we will invite you in to discuss your childs progress. If your childs key person requires some additional training to support your childs needs we will access this. If we feel more specialist support is needed for your child we will take your childs case to a LIFT (Local Inclusion Forum Team) meeting where your childs case will be discussed with a range of specialist teachers who will offer advice and support as to what strategies we could put in place to help support your child further. They may come out to us to assess your child within the setting and to offer advice and strategies we can put in place to support your child further.
How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?
We are an inclusive pre-school and all children are included. We will make the necessary adaptations to ensure that your child can take part in the same activities as the other children. We will never make your child feel that they are different and will make alterations to ensure that they are included. Your childs key person will support your child during activities that are different or require more support to take part
How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?
The building is accessible to children with mobility difficulties and wheelchair users. There are no steps to access the building and it is flat to access the outside play area. The doors are wide to enable a wheelchair access. The hall has a disabled toilet
How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?
We will work together with you to support your childs transition to school. We will contact the school and may suggest a meeting with them to discuss the best way to support your childs transition to school. This maybe a joint meeting with yourself, our SENCo and your childs key person, specialist teacher, if they are involved and the SENCo from the new school. Any Targeted Plans and Personalised Plans will be forwarded onto the new school so that they aware of strategies that we have put in place to support your child. Where necessary, we may recommend equipment and resources that we have found particularly useful to support your child during their time with us.
How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?
We regularly assess our SEN provision to ensure it is effective to support all children who may need additional support. Staff can access training both online and go on courses to help their understanding of certain conditions and areas of need to support particular training. Children that are on a Targeted Plan or Personalised Plan have their plans reviewed every term and parents are invited in to the setting to go through the plan with the key person to go through how the plan has worked and whether it needs to be altered or adapted to make it more achievable for the child. We welcome parents input into these plans to see how things are working at home
Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?
You should contact the pre-school by phone or email
What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
We value feedback from parents about their views and opinions of the setting and things we could put in place to make improvements where necessary. At the end of the year we send out a comments slip for parents to complete, with a bit where children can add their views on what they have enjoyed at pre-school. We have a complaints procedure if a parent feels they would like to make a complaint. We have an open door policy where parents can come in to speak to us at any time, if they wish
