aArtvark

aARTvark is an artistic day centre based in Ashford for adults with learning disabilities, additional needs and mental health problems.

At aArtvark we use a wide variety of drawing, painting and textile techniques, and we enjoy an array of craft activities.

We are driven by the challenge in finding ways and to make adaptations for each individual to enable them to reach their goals. It is our priority that the works created are achieved by the student with our guidance and support, so that ultimately the artwork is theirs to be proud of.

We have regular exhibitions, and students are involved in the whole process. It is a joy to see how proud the students are to display their work to the public and to discuss it with visitors.

aArtvark is run by a professional artist who is a fully qualified and registered art teacher. The other members of our aArtvark team are specialised in a variety of subject areas, making it a very exciting learning environment. We also make sure that the art products and materials used are of the best quality, as our students deserve to experience working with products that will help them to achieve the best possible results. At aArtvark, we strongly believe in integrated learning, and as a registered Asdan centre we deliver a variety of courses, but without putting any pressure on our students; often students don't necessarily realise they are working towards a certificate.

Our students have built many friendships, and occasionally there are outings to places such as the Harry Potter Studio, restaurants, the cinema and the theatre.

Feel free to contact us for a free taster session.

Our projects and support aim to provide a stepping stone towards greater independence for people with learning difficulties and/or autism. In our groups, people have the opportunity to develop a range of skills. These include skills linked to the project, for example, music, media, performing arts, catering or woodwork. In addition, people using our groups build social skills, confidence and self-advocacy.

bemix works with individuals to develop a person centred support plan. The plan sets outcomes and goals that they would like to achieve and that are important to them. These are reviewed throughout a person's journey with bemix. The reviews include one to one sessions dedicated to supporting people to move on from bemix and access further opportunities.

Choice Support - Growing Concern

We can support you to learn horticultural skills at our site in Staplehurst, Kent.

We grow fruit, herbs, plants and vegetables in our large garden. It's a great feeling to know that you've helped to grow something that also tastes great! We also sell what we grow to local businesses.

Working outdoors can be great for your health and wellbeing. Some people find they are more focused and productive working outside, rather than working in an office.

There's lots for you to do throughout the year and our team can help you with tasks that may be more demanding, such as digging.

You will soon grow in confidence, as you learn skills and get your hands dirty. We're a small employment service, so it very person-centred. You'll be working together as a team, which is great for your morale.

Choice Support - Ken Boyce Centre

We run lots of different activities at the centre, like computer skills, gardening, massage and a recycling project. We also run a popular shop, cook and eat session.

The majority of our activities take place in the community, like rambling, swimming, hydrotherapy, cycling and bowling.

We have some very good sports teams. We’ve played cricket at Lord’s cricket ground and our football team, Bexley Lions, plays in the South London Special League. When the weather is good, we go fishing.

We like to get creative too. We have put on performances like our Singing and Signing show and we walked down the catwalk like models at our fashion show.

Who do we support?

We support adults aged 18 and over who have autism or learning disabilities.

You must have funding in place to pay for the support. This could be funding through the London Borough of Bexley, through a personal budget or your own money.

How do I join the Ken Boyce Centre?

You can self-refer to us - just drop us an email or call us. You can get referred through social services at the London Borough of Bexley.

You may wish to visit us before you join. We'll give you a tour around the building and you'll get to meet the manager and the staff.

Parents group

Join our group for parents. We meet four times a year at the Ken Boyce Centre.

This is your opportunity to be more involved in what we do and be part of something special. You’ll be able to share advice, find out what’s going on and help organise fundraising events.

Can we support you?

Yes, as long as you are over 18 years old and have learning disabilities. You will need to pay for the activities and you can do that if you have your own funding or if you have been assessed for funding through your local council.

Choice Support - Tuck by Truck

Having a job is an important part of life, but people with learning disabilities and autism find it difficult to gain work skills and find meaningful employment. Tuck by Truck offers excellent work experience and paid employment opportunities.

We support people with learning disabilities and autism to gain work skills and find work.

We pack boxes full of snacks and drinks and deliver them to over 500 businesses around Aylesford, Erith and Herne Bay.

People who come to work at Tuck by Truck start as volunteers or paid delivery assistants. Each role is different, but whatever they do people build up their skills, gain work experience to put on their CV, and grow in confidence.

There are lots of different skills you'll learn here, from packing boxes and counting money to delivering trays to customers and health and safety checks.

We've also helped people to go on work placements or find paid work with other organisations. We can help you to do this, when you feel confident.

Eco Shed - Woodwork and recycled arts (bemix)

Eco Shed is a woodworking and upcycling arts project in Sittingbourne.

We work alongside people with learning difficulties/disabilities and/or autism.  We support people to learn skills and develop their own ideas in wood work, recycling, upcycling and creative practical art.  We also support people to learn skills in business and social enterprise as part of the wider project.

Eco Shed is based in a modern workshop which enables us to make products to sell on the open market. Any profit we make is reinvested back into the project. We regularly display and sell our products at fairs and promotional events around Kent and also work in partnership with a number of local organisations and community groups.

We are passionate about recycling. All of the products made are from recycled materials. We recycle paper, card, plastic, glass and tins which are separated into bins and recycled. Waste is weighed and recorded and can be found on our progress reports. We feel strongly about raising awareness about ethical and environmental issues and have worked together to produce works of art which not only are made from recyclable materials but also benefit local wildlife. The items also produce a beautiful backdrop of colour in the garden. We have displayed these works of art in various locations showing that our products are creative, beneficial for the environment and everyone can be involved.

Eco Shed is part of bemix (formerly Skillnet Group); we believe everyone should work together equally within the community.

This project runs within the Day Opportunities framework, Lot 2, Promoting Independence

Through our Kent Supported Employment team, we have been supporting students and adult jobseekers into tailored work experience, internships, apprenticeships and paid employment since 1991. We provide high quality support to help you prepare for, enter and succeed in the world of work.

Supported Employment aims to enhance, inspire and empower disabled and disadvantaged individuals into sustainable employment pathways. We provide a professional end to end service, to enable people to be self-sufficient within the work place. We promote to employers the benefits of employing a diverse and inclusive work force.

We can support you with:

  • Helping you create a new CV or review an existing one and understand how employers use them
  • The different ways of applying for jobs and how to answer certain types of questions
  • Deciding on a career that suits you. We use a vocational profile and professional careers guidance to help you make informed choices about the job you would like to do and see what your skills and aspirations are
  • Work experience and tasters to build on your experience and introduce you to different working environments
  • Preparing for an interview. Many people find interviews daunting, we can help with what to expect and run practice interviews
  • Talking to employers, support to liaise with managers and HR to negotiate flexible working conditions and reasonable adjustments in the workplace (if appropriate), and contacting Department of Work and Pensions about assessments and adaptations
  • Travelling to work to become more confident using public transport and learning new routes
  • Starting your job, we can give you in-work support, with job coaching, to help you learn and understand your new role
  • Advice on benefits to understand how any benefits you receive will be affected if you work and complete better off financial calculations
  • Providing support if you are already in work and are experiencing difficulty due to a disability or health condition.

Hadlow Pottery

We are a working pottery producing quality items of functional and decorative ware which we sell through local outlets and community events throughout Kent. Our aim is to build the individual's confidence through the production of the pot. Each person has their own design giving them a sense of identity.  Any profits made go back into the service to provide therapuetic art and craft activities for adults with learning difficulties. We also offer other art, craft and clay hand building projects for self development.

WE HAVE MOVED!   We are now situated in the new UPZ & DOWNZ COMMUNITY CAFE.  Having been given notice to leave the Hadlow College Horticultural site in Hadlow we were given the opportunity to rent a workshop in the new Community Cafe building on the Tonbridge Angels Football Ground. This has been a blessing in disguise.  We have been welcomed into the Tonbridge Angels Community who have been so supportive and our working relationship with UPZ & DOWNZ has been fantastic. Our Potters love the move and feel more integrated into society. This move has opened up a world of opportunities.

The John Graham Centre

The John Graham Centre –providing indoor and outdoor activities and opportunities for adults who have a learning disability.

Established in 2003, The John Graham Centre based on a farm in the village of Blean just outside Canterbury provides a warm and welcoming day service both indoors and outdoors for adults with learning disabilities.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

  • THE FARM - helping to look after all the farm animals, sheep, pigs, cows, goats, donkeys, plus small animals- chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs.. Learning the care needed – feeding regimes, exercise, grooming, cleaning out and making new beds in the animal houses.  For many people, getting to know animals and working with them instills great personal satisfaction, feeling valued, helping to develop /improve expressive speech and communication skills, confidence and a general feeling of wellbeing.
  • HORSE RIDING – a small riding arena gives opportunity for horse riding indoors, plus outdoors in fields and woodland under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Also learning the overall care of the horse, feeding, grooming, leading horses in and out to grazing . Stable management, care of equipment, cleaning tack learning to clean out the stable and make a clean bed for the horse.
  • GARDENING large areas for learning about growing vegetables and flowers. Very therapeutic and rewarding activity for many people, helping to learn the importance of vegetables in our diet, learning new skills, working in a team or individually. Also, opportunity to join a small community gardening group helping local residents.
  • LOGGING – helping a local farmer in the village to bag up logs, meeting new people, integrating in the local community.
  • SWIMMING in Faversham, Herne Bay, Whitstable public swimming pools – regular weekly sessions very much enjoyed. Again, integrating locally, developng/maintaining social skills, team building exercises.
  • FOOTBALL- joining organized Group to participate in courses organized by the Go Ability Trust and run by the KFA at Polo Farm Sports Centre in Canterbury with qualified football coaches.
  • SOME OTHER ACTIVITIES – may include - Travel training – individual or group, depending on need. Crabbing – dependent on weather and tides, very popular, much enjoyed social time in community. Outings – visiting places of interest locally – we have complimentary passes to Canterbury Cathedral. Spring /Summer – Cycling -we have our own cycles/tricycles plus we may cycle with a local club in Canterbury, using organised cycle tracks.

INDOOR ACTIITIES

  • COOKING a large well-equipped kitchen gives opportunity to gain or further develop skills – preparation of food, cooking, learning about good and not so good foods to eat, gaining confidence and increasing independence in health and safety in the kitchen. Small groups of 4 to 6 or individual support, depending on ability. All take part, discuss planning, developing individual portfolios to refer to or share with family/friends.
  • ART AND CRAFT – very popular department, creative and therapeutic. Group or individual projects, depending on choice. Good socialising skill development, hand eye coordination, team building, helping each other, developing friendships, gaining confidence and progressing independence skills.
  • MUSIC AND DANCE – always popular, encourages personal expression, fun sessions, choices, aids personal development/confidence, mobility. Opportunity to take part in dance projects organised locally in partnership with The Go Ability Trust.
  • SIGNING CLASSES – classes held weekly in Makaton/BSL signing popular sessions, fun and learning in the further development of communication skills
  • LITERACY – for those who wish to further develop reading and writing skills, individual or small group sessions held weekly

The John Graham Centre is a family run independent enterprise working closely with students, their families, professionals, voluntary bodies and the local community.

Prior to attendance a taster day is offered free of charge, this enables the prospective student to get the feel of the Centre and is an opportunity for staff to assess the level of ability and support that will be required.

Health and safety is paramount, staff must complete a high level of Core Training plus specialist courses as required. All staff have enhanced DBS plus two referees prior to commencing their employment.

The John Graham Centre has a full-time health and safety officer on site plus a full-time quality assurance manager.

The John Graham Centre is both progressive and forward looking, the inclusion of skills for life is present in every activity that we do – social skills, communication, speech development, self-confidence, self-value, the well-being of each student is paramount. During 2018 each student with support of staff will be developing/updating their personal portfolio for their own reflection on goals achieved, plus providing evidence that they can share with friends/family/professionals of their very valued progress along the life-skills pathway.

The Life Skills centre (Folkestone) Ltd

The Life Skills Centre runs Monday to Friday, closing on bank holidays and a short break over the Christmas period. We have a 15-seated minibus, which transports some of our service users to & from Life Skills & also is very handy for our off-site activities.

The Centre itself has 5 classroom-based activities, these being Art & Crafts, Discovery Room, STAR ( Skills, Training, Achievements & Rewards) Room, Computer Skills & a fully functioning workshop offering Woodwork Skills & Hobby Craft.

Twice weekly (Wednesday & Friday), we go to a gym, this is at PVLC, a disability inclusion gym with qualified gym Instructors who provide individuals with their own training program to work on. We also access Hythe swimming pool twice weekly, Monday is a session where we swim with other members of the public & Thursday we have the pool to ourselves, this is more of a fun-based session where we use balls & floats and thoroughly enjoy ourselves!

As a Centre, we regularly have trips to Folkestone Town Centre, which is only a few minutes away.  During this off-site activity, we focus on budgeting skills and the value of money and also building confidence to shop independently.

We also access local art galleries as part of the Art & Crafts group.

During the summer months and dry weather, we have some off-site trips, for example to Brockhill Country Park or Kearsney Abbey. We also hold regular client meetings to ensure that our service users have their say and inform us of trips they’d like to do. These are all highly organised and booked in advance, with letters sent to parents & Carers.

We also have cinema trips & football tournaments!

Symbol Hop Yard Dickley Day Service

Symbol have established what we have called The Hop Yard services. These offer something new, diverse, exciting, innovative and fun in the form of a wide range of activities for children and adults of all ages.  The Hop Yard is a great place to learn a new skill, and meet new friends.

Site Based activities

Art studio which offers a vast array of creative art activities such as pencil, pen, paintwool crafts, felt, silk, paper mache sculpture and model making plus many more.

We are also able to offer our equine centre at the Dray in Hollingbourne. Participants have hands on experience in horsemanship, all stable and yard duties and of course ride in our safe arena.

Our goals are:

To bring people who may suffer from isolation, together, in a supportive setting.

To encourage and support members with achieving personal goals. (Educational, holistic, short term and long term)

To use Arts and creativity in a therapeutic setting

To support clients in accessing events and places of interest in the wider community.

Our Folkestone centre is on Tontine Street, in the heart of the Creative Quarter. We have a kitchen that has full disabled access so that all are able to enjoy learning to cook or baking for pleasure. There is a freshly cooked lunch available every day, as well as tea and coffee making facilities.

Our Art and Craft Studio is supported by local artists who help us to provide a wide variety of artistic activities. So whether you like to paint for relaxation, have a go at printmaking, learn a new skill such as pottery, silversmithing or dressmaking, we will endeavor to facilitate your interest.

We have the facilities to teach IT skills, Photography, Film and Animation. Please click here to see some of our film and animation projects! Every month we aim to have a trip or event e.g Lunch at a local restaurant, curry night, art galleries, picnics, quiz nights, theatre, live gigs, Kew Gardens.

We work in a person-centered way adapting to the interests of our members. Whilst accessing the service members have the opportunity to work towards ASDAN Short Courses, which are flexible, portfolio-based programs, designed to accredit up to 60 hours of activity and skills development across a range of topics and curriculum areas. There are more than 30 to choose from, including Expressive Arts, Food Wise, PSHE, Volunteering and Mathematics, to name a few.

From January 2018 we will also offer level 1 and 2 qualifications during day care with us. This will be optional and the activities are:

  • flexible and can meet the needs of different learners
  • supported personalised learning
  • can be used in a range of contexts
  • encourage a ‘pick and mix’ approach, allowing learning opportunities to be chosen for varying time frames
  • are generic and can be adapted to suit any vocational interest

The three main accredited programs on offer will be;

COPE - The Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE)  a flagship qualification and offers an imaginative way of accrediting young people with a wide range of enrichment and extra-curricular activities, allowing us to certificate a wide range of personal qualities, skills and achievements.

AOPE -  The Award of Personal Effectiveness, is a shorter version of CoPE, carrying performance table points comparable to half a GCSE and 30 UCAS points at Level 3. AoPE is approved by Ofqual and sits within the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).

Employability Skills Development  Course - The Employability Skills Development course takes an activity-based approach to raising learners’ awareness about employer expectations and the working environment, support learners in preparation for vocational training for achieving an employability qualification, or for getting a job.

Wood n Ware Cic Ashford - Day service for adults living with learning disabilities

We are an excellent not for profit day service providing woodwork and recycling opportunities to adults living with disabilities. We are set in the heart of the local business community of Ashford in Kent. We have a very large workshop allowing for great equipment and plenty of space for creative freedom.

We create in partnership with adults living with disabilities, this includes wildlife homes, garden furniture, bespoke commissions, recycling and repurposing of furniture. We work together as part of a team but also support with individual project work for your own innovative designs.

We are a friendly and welcoming team that like to meet new people and invite the general public in to see what we do. We feel passionately about our local environment and community and donate our products to local services and schools to raise awareness of protecting the local wildlife. Everything we make together is from recycled or reclaimed materials and all profits are put back into the service to continue to improve on what we provide for you.

We tailor our service to meet your needs so you can achieve your desired outcomes. If you are interested in finding out more about us you can contact us for availability of a taster session. This is a half day session that gives you the opportunity to experience one of our activities and is free. We also welcome planned visits for you to just have a look around, either way we look forward to meeting you!
